Ondo Begins Swearing-In Of Aiyedatiwa As Governor

In a solemn moment in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, the swearing-in ceremony for Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the new Governor is ongoing. This significant event follows the unfortunate passing of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu on Wednesday, creating a poignant transition of leadership.

The state government officially confirmed the news of Governor Akeredolu's demise through a statement from Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs. Bamidele Ademola-Olateju. The statement conveyed the deep sorrow the Ondo State Government felt, announcing, "With a heavy heart, the Ondo State Government announces the passing of our beloved Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON." Governor Akeredolu, aged 67, peacefully departed in Germany, succumbing to complications arising from prolonged prostate cancer.

The Governor had faced health challenges, leading to two separate medical vacations, the first on April 3, 2023, and the second on July 10, 2023. After returning to the country on September 7, he promptly informed the state House of Assembly about his condition.

Justice Olusegun Odusola, the state Chief Judge, was earlier reported to preside over the swearing-in ceremony, marking the official transition of power. Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who served as the deputy governor, had power formally transferred to him on December 13, following Governor Akeredolu's decision to embark on another medical vacation.

As Ondo State navigates this challenging period of loss and change, the swearing-in ceremony symbolises a new chapter in its leadership. Governor Aiyedatiwa takes on the responsibility of guiding the state forward.
