Aiyedatiwa Declared Winner Of Ondo APC Governorship Primary

Lucky Aiyedatiwa emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary for Ondo State, which concluded its voting process last Saturday. The announcement was made by the chairman of the election committee, Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, in the early hours of Monday.

Governor Ododo confirmed that the direct primary election mode was utilized across all 203 electoral wards of the 18 local government areas (LGAs) in Ondo State. Aiyedatiwa secured a sweeping win in 16 out of the 18 LGAs.

In the primaries, Aiyedatiwa garnered 48,569 votes, outperforming his nearest competitor, Mayowa Akinfolarin, who received 15,343 votes. The third place was claimed by Olusola Oke with 14,865 votes. Notably, Aiyedatiwa was defeated in Ilaje LGA by Oke, who came in third overall.

In his acceptance speech, an elated Aiyedatiwa expressed gratitude to his party members for their support and officially accepted the nomination as the APC's candidate. He acknowledged the challenges that can arise post-election and emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among party members to ensure continued success for the APC.

Aiyedatiwa Declares Two-Day Holiday For Akeredolu’s Funeral


Ondo State Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa has announced that Thursday, February 22nd, and Friday, February 23rd, 2024, will be public holidays across the state.

This decision, as conveyed by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, is a mark of respect for the late former governor of the state, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who passed away last December.

The two designated days off are intended to allow the people of Ondo State to participate fully in the burial proceedings for the late governor. The schedule of events for the burial ceremonies, which commenced last Thursday, is as follows:

  • Wednesday, February 21: Traditional Rites (Ajabue) in Owo from 9 am to 4 pm. A Special Court Session will be held at Court 1, Ondo State High Court Headquarters, Hospital Road, Akure, at 10 am. Lying in State and Commendation Service at Akure Township Stadium at 1 pm, followed by an Evening of Tributes at St. Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, from 4 pm to 7 pm.
  • Thursday, February 22 (public holiday): Service of Songs at St. Andrews Cathedral, Imola Street, Owo, at 4 pm. Wake-Keep at Maranatha Villa, Owo, starting at 8 pm. Candlelight Procession & World Gyration by the Kegites Club from 8 pm until Dawn.
  • Friday, February 23 (public holiday): Funeral Service at St. Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, at 10 am. Interment follows immediately after the burial service at the burial site in Owo (strictly for immediate family). The reception is at the Mydas Hotel and Resort, Ikare Road, Owo, at 1 pm.
  • Saturday, February 24, 2024: Akeredolu Memorial Friendly Football Match at Akure Township Stadium, Akure, starting at 3 pm.
  • Sunday, February 25, 2024: Thanksgiving Service at St. Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, at 10 am.

Ondo Assembly Confirms Adelami As Aiyedatiwa’s Deputy

The Ondo State House of Assembly has screened and ratified a former Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly, Olayide Adelami, as the state's Deputy Governor.

At the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, the Clerk of the House, Benjamin Jaiyeola, read the nomination letter written to the House by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa yesterday.

Submitting the screening committee report, the Deputy Speaker, Abayomi Akinruntan, noted that Adelami had been confirmed to be a man of reputable character, well-exposed, and physically and mentally fit for the position.

In his response, Adelami thanked the governor for allowing him to serve the state, saying his appointment was a call of duty, and he promised to work for the development of Ondo State and the country.

He also promised to promote a harmonious relationship between the state executive and the legislature.

The Speaker, on his part, pledged that the legislature would give the executive the support needed at all times, stressing that with the confirmation of Adelami, the stage had been set for the rapid development of Ondo State.

Aiyedatiwa, who was sworn in on December 27, 2023, following the death of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, picked the late governor’s relative from Owo as his deputy.
