Bill On Establishment Of NASS Budget Office Scales Second Reading

A Bill for an Act to establish the National Assembly (NASS) Budget and Research Office has scaled second reading in the Senate.

If eventually passed, the bill sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, will provide the National Assembly with objective, timely and non-partisan analysis needed for economic and budget decisions.

The Bill is expected to run concurrently with the budget office of the executive.

In a debate, the lawmakers argue that the bill which has suffered rejection in previous assemblies over the last 20 years, remains critical in strengthening legislative efficiency and ensuring the budget passed by the executive, is thoroughly scrutinized.

In the same strength, the upper chamber debated the new directive on the recruitment of policemen.

Senate Summons Wike, CP Over Nwoko’s Aide Killing By Kidnapper

The Senate has summoned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igwe over the spate of kidnapping in the region.

This comes in the wake of the murder of Chris Agidy, an aide to Senator Ned Nwoko, by some kidnappers.

Agidy was reportedly kidnapped along with 19 others in the Galadimawa area of Abuja in November 2023.

Following an exhaustive debate on the motion sponsored by Senator Nwoko, the Senate also resolved that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, should urgently increase security patrols and surveillance within Abuja and across the nation as a proactive measure against kidnappings.

March 1, 2024 Gas-To-Power: FG Pays Gas Suppliers Over $120m

Gas-To-Power: FG Pays Gas Suppliers Over $120m

The Federal Government has paid 120 million dollars out of the 1.3 billion dollars indebtedness to gas companies for the supply of gas to run gas-fired power plants across the country.

Nigeria is currently suffering from low power supply because many gas suppliers have reduced, while others stopped supplying the commodity to power-generating companies due to the indebtedness of the Gencos to gas-producing firms.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, recently revealed that the crash in power generation and attendant poor supply since January was because gas suppliers stopped supplying gas for the generation of electricity due to the indebtedness of the sector to gas producers.

Nigeria gets more than 70 per cent of its electricity from thermal power plants that run on gas. The remaining amount of electricity comes from hydropower-generating plants.

Speaking at the ongoing 7th Nigeria International Energy Summit in Abuja on Thursday, the Director, Decade of Gas Secretariat, Ed Ubong, expressed excitement that the Federal Government had cleared $120m out of the $1.3bn gas debts.

The Decade of Gas Secretariat is under the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas). The Federal Government is subsidising electricity by paying for the gas used in generating power, as Nigerian power users are currently not paying the exact amount for electricity.
