Anthony Elanga Rescues Late Draw at Atletico Madrid

Anthony Elanga came to Manchester United’s rescue as his 80th-minute strike secured a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the Wanda Metropolitano.

United were seeking to emulate the three other English sides left in the Champions League by securing a first-leg lead in the first knockout round, and Ralf Rangnick said on the eve of the trip to Madrid that he was prioritising this competition.

But his side fell behind within seven minutes of kick-off in Spain. Having cleared the initial corner, Atleti left-back Renan Lodi swung in a cross from the left that Joao Felix raced past Harry Maguire to greet with a stunning header that went in off the near post.

The visitors bossed possession but did not look at all comfortable during an insipid first half. Cristiano Ronaldo, whistled throughout, became increasingly irate by Atletico’s approach and the hosts went close to a second just before half-time as Sime Vrsaljko hit the crossbar.

United had produced a listless display before substitute Elanga latched onto Bruno Fernandes’ pass to reverse his shot across Jan Oblak into the bottom corner.

“I think that was my first touch as well,” Elanga told BT Sport. “I’ve dreamt of moments like this, scoring in the Champions League against a top opponent such as Atletico, it’s a dream come true. It’s only half-time in the tie.

“I told you how calm and cool I am whenever I get an opportunity for the club. I leave nothing in the tank when I step out onto the pitch and I just enjoy it.”

With away goals no longer counting in Europe, it means the tie is firmly in the balance ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday March 15.

Champions Atletico Madrid Stunned by Bottom Side Levante

Atletico Madrid’s poor form continued as the La Liga champions were beaten by bottom club Levante on Wednesday.

Gonzalo Melero scored the only goal of the game in the second half, driving home from the middle of the box.

Angel Correa thought he had equalised in stoppage time with a stunning overhead kick, but it was ruled out for a foul.

Mickael Malsa then almost added a spectacular second for Levante but his shot from the halfway line hit the bar.

There was more drama to come in the final seconds when Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak headed wide of the post from a set-piece.

The defeat was Atletico’s sixth in 10 league matches and leaves them fifth, 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side will now hope for a morale-boosting result at Osasuna on Saturday before they host Manchester United in a Champions League last-16 first-leg game next Wednesday.

Liverpool Ease Past Atletico Madrid To Reach UCL Round Of 16

Liverpool swept into the last 16 of the Champions League with a comfortable win over 10-man Atletico Madrid that ensured they will finish top of Group B.

Early goals by Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane, both created by Trent Alexander-Arnold, put the Reds in full command and there was no way back for the Spanish side once Felipe was sent off before half-time.

Jurgen Klopp’s side should have dished out more punishment after the break but missed a flurry of chances and Jota had another strike ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee.

Atletico thought they had pulled a goal back from a deflected shot by former Reds striker Luis Suarez, but that too was chalked off for offside by VAR and they never seriously threatened a comeback.

As well as sending Liverpool through to the knockout stage with two games to spare, the win extends the Reds’ unbeaten start to the season to 16 games.

In total, they have not tasted defeat for 25 matches, dating back to 6 April when they lost to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of last season’s Champions League.

Real Sociedad Go Top Of La Liga Table After Draw With Atletico Madrid

Real Sociedad went back to the top of La Liga, after being held to a 2-2 draw by reigning champions, Atletico Madrid.

Luis Suarez scored a brace for the home side who survived a scare after going 2 goals down against the visitors.

La Real, who last won the title in 1982, led 2-0 when Alexander Isak set up Alexander Sorloth for the opener and then curled in a free-kick.

But Suarez pulled one back with a header from Joao Felix's cross.

And the veteran levelled with a penalty to make it 2-2 after he had been fouled by Mikel Merino.

Real Sociedad are one point above Real Madrid, who had gone top with a 2-1 win at Barcelona earlier in the day.

Third-placed Sevilla beat Levante 5-3 in Sunday's early game and Atletico are fourth - three points behind the leaders.
