Giroud Overhead Kick Grants Chelsea Win Over Atletico

Olivier Giroud's spectacular overhead kick provided an advantage for Chelsea as they sealed victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last 16 first leg in Bucharest.

Giroud's moment of improvisation not only handed the win and a vital away goal but also continued new manager Thomas Tuchel's unbeaten start at Chelsea and put them in pole position to reach the quarter-finals.

In a tie played in Romania instead of Spain due of Covid-19 restrictions, Giroud demonstrated athleticism and technique to send an acrobatic effort past Atletico keeper Jan Oblak in the 68th minute. The goal was initially chalked off after an offside call before a video assistant referee review revealed the ball had bounced off Atletico defender Mario Hermoso.

This was a dismal showing from an Atletico Madrid side who have been excellent domestically, topping the league over Real Madrid, Sevilla and Barcelona.

Chelsea have now gone eight matches unbeaten since Tuchel succeeded Frank Lampard while Giroud is emerging as their Champions League ‘hitman’ after scoring all four goals in the group-phase victory against Sevilla and a last-minute winner away to Rennes.

Celta Vigo Hold Atletico Madrid Despite Suarez Double

Luis Suarez scored twice but it was not enough to earn victory for La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid as they were held to a draw by Celta Vigo.

Santi Mina headed the visitors into the lead before Suarez tucked in an equalizer just before the break.

The Uruguay forward then put Atletico ahead in the second half when he drove home Renan Lodi's cross.

That looked set to give Atletico a 17th league win of the season but Facundo Ferreyra equalized in the 89th minute.

The draw means Atletico, who have lost only one league game this season, are eight points clear of second-placed Barcelona with a game in hand over Ronald Koeman's side.

Suarez, who left Barcelona for Atletico last summer, is the top scorer in La Liga with 16 goals.

Atletico Madrid Forward, Joao Felix Tests Positive For Coronavirus

La Liga League leaders, Atletico Madrid has announced that forward Joao Felix is now the third player in two weeks to test positive for Covid-19.

"Joao Felix has tested positive for Covid-19. The striker is isolating at home, in compliance with the health authorities' guidelines and La Liga protocols," Atletico said in a statement on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old Portuguese youngster joins teammates Yannick Carrasco and Mario Hermoso, who tested positive for coronavirus last week, on the sidelines.

Carrasco and Hermoso missed Atletico's 4-2 win at Cadiz on Sunday, but club record-signing Felix started and played 60 minutes yet will now be unavailable for Monday's clash at home to Celta Vigo.

Felix, who moved to Atletico from Benfica for a club-record £113m in the summer of 2019, has made 25 appearances for Diego Simeone's side in all competitions this season, scoring nine goals.

January 22, 2021 Suarez Double Secures Victory For Atletico Madrid

Suarez Double Secures Victory For Atletico Madrid

A Luis Suarez brace sent Atletico Madrid seven points clear in La Liga as they recovered after goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic had given Eibar the lead.

Dmitrovic, taking on penalty duties for the first time for his club, fired in his first career goal.

But Suarez levelled from a tight angle with a driven effort into the far corner after Eibar gave the ball away on the edge of their own box.

Suarez then netted the winner with a Panenka penalty in the 89th minute.

Dmitrovic was denied the chance to try to rescue his side a point when Eibar had a penalty rejected in injury time, as they appealed in vain for a handball against Atleti's Stefan Savic.

The Serb goalkeeper was the fourth player to take a penalty for Eibar in La Liga this season - before he stepped up, they had missed three out of five spot-kicks in the league, including their previous two.

It is a big win for Diego Simeone's side, who now have a strong grip on the title race in Spain.

As well as a seven-point advantage on second-placed Real Madrid, the reigning champions, and a 10-point lead over Barcelona, they have a game in hand on both.

Suarez, who joined the club after being released by Barca in the summer, has played a huge role in helping them achieve this, with Thursday's two goals taking him to 11 for the season - level with Lionel Messi.
