Keiran Trippier’s Ban Appeal Rejected By FIFA

Kieran Trippier's 10-week ban for breaking betting rules applies globally, FIFA ruled as it dismissed an appeal by his club, Atletico Madrid.

He was banned and fined £70,000 after being found to have broken betting rules.

The England full-back was suspended by the Football Association in December, but the ban was provisionally lifted in January after Atletico appealed.

The Spaniards argued the FA could not ban a player not active in its league.

But FIFA backed the decision, ruling "sanctions imposed on the player by the English FA to have worldwide effect".

Atletico are now taking their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Trippier's ban, which started on 21 December, will now resume up to and including 28 February, but if CAS agree to hear the case he will be free to keep playing until a decision is made.

His suspension cannot extend beyond 28 February, irrespective of what CAS decides.

As it stands, following the decision from FIFA, Trippier will miss the first leg of Atletico's Champions League last-16 tie with Chelsea on 23 February, but could return for the second leg on 17 March.

Kieran Trippier Handed 10-Week Ban For Breaching Betting Rules

England and Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier has been given a 10-week worldwide football ban and fined £70,000 after a Football Association panel found he broke betting rules.

The 30-year-old denied seven alleged breaches, but four were found proven during a personal hearing.

The offences occurred in July 2019, which is when Trippier joined Atletico from Tottenham Hotspur.

His ban from all football is effective immediately.

He will miss 12 games for La Liga leaders Atletico, including their Champions League last-16 first leg tie at home to Chelsea on 23 February.

RONALDO DECLARED FIT AGAINST ATLETICO

Atletico Madrid will not be spared the spectre of Cristiano Ronaldo when Diego Simeone’s side travel to Turin to take on Juventus in the Champions League after the Serie A side confirmed the Portugal captain has fully recovered from his recent knee issues.

The Juventus forward has played 32 games against the Rojiblancos and scored 25 goals with eight assists. His record is 16 wins, nine draws and nine losses – testament to the work of Simeone since he took over at the Calderon and ended the 14-year curse – but the devastation he can wreak is still fresh in the mind for the Liga side.

Last season, a 2-0 victory in the Champions League last 16 first leg at the Metropolitano seemed to be enough to guarantee progress.

Atletico were scoring freely and had never lost a Champions League tie after winning the first leg. Juventus had never overturned a two-goal deficit in Europe either home or away. But Ronaldo came, Ronaldo saw and Ronaldo conquered.

Juve are already through to the knock-out stages but will be looking to ensure they finish as group winners, while Atletico are four points clear of Lokomotiv Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen and host the Russian side in the final round of fixtures.
