AFCON2023: I Am Not Happy With Result, Says Peseiro After Super Eagles Draw

Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has conveyed his disappointment regarding the outcome of the match between his team and the Elephants of Equatorial Guinea on Sunday at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ivory Coast. Despite the anticipation surrounding the African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, Nigeria was held to a 1-1 draw by Equatorial Guinea in Group A.

Osimhen managed to level the score in the 38th minute of the first half with a well-timed header, responding swiftly after Iban Edu opened the scoring. The match concluded with both teams securing one point each, trailing the host nation by two points.

Expressing his dissatisfaction in a post-match interview, Peseiro stated, “I am not happy. This draw does not suit us. Our team created a lot of chances, but we did not score.” He emphasized the team's intention to secure a victory, highlighting the missed opportunities and asserting their deserving win over Equatorial Guinea.

Acknowledging the unpredictable nature of football, Peseiro commented, “If you draw and your opponent deserves a win, then you must accept it because I think we deserved to beat Equatorial Guinea, but sometimes these things happen in football.”

Despite his sadness about the result, Peseiro expressed satisfaction with the team's capacity to play. He emphasized the need for improved command and control of the game, effective attacking strategies, and enhanced finishing. Peseiro remained optimistic, stating, "I believe we can create fewer opportunities and score more.”

Providing an update on Alhassan Yusuf's injury, Peseiro acknowledged the player's commendable performance and expressed hope that the injury is not severe. Looking ahead, Nigeria will face the host, Ivory Coast, on Thursday in their second Group A game, a crucial match that the three-time African champions must win to enhance their chances of progressing to the next round.

Osimhen Crowned 2023 CAF Footballer Of The Year

Victor Osimhen has been crowned the 2023 African Footballer of the Year, cementing his position as one of the top players in the world.
Osimhen defeated Moroccan Achraf Hakimi and Egyptian star Mohamed Salah to win the award.

The accolade on Monday finished off a stellar year for the Super Eagles striker, whose historic win in the royal Moroccan city of Marakesh ended Nigeria's 24-year wait for Africa's top individual honour which was last won by the legendary Kanu Nwankwo in 1999.

At the ceremony,  Osimhen praised Nigerian icon Emmanuel Amuneke, who coached him at the U-17 level, and fans nationwide.

"First and foremost, I want to thank God for everything. "I'd like to thank Mr. Emmanuel Amunike in particular; without him, I don't think I'd be standing here in front of you guys, holding one of the most prestigious awards in world football," he said.

The award recognizes Osimhen's achievements for both his Napoli club and the national squad, where he plays an important role. He led the Italian squad to an unprecedented Serie A triumph, scoring 26 goals in the season to become the league's first African top scorer.

Though Nigeria narrowly missed out on a place in the 2022 World Cup, falling to perennial rivals Ghana, Osimhen's services to the Super Eagles were enormous in the year under review. He led the qualification race for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with ten goals.

Osimhen's inclusion in the 2023 Ballon d'Or was a testament to his efforts to the Serie A team's historic performance. He finished eighth, becoming the highest-ranked African for the year and the highest-ranked Nigerian in the award's history.
