UCL Concern: Napoli Await Osimhen’s Fitness For Barcelona Showdown

Napoli, the reigning Serie A champions, are facing a nerve-wracking situation as they await updates on Victor Osimhen's fitness ahead of their pivotal UEFA Champions League encounter against Barcelona.

Sky Sport Italia reports indicate that the striker is still not in his peak physical condition following his recent stint at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

During the tournament held in Cote d’Ivoire, Osimhen reportedly shed between 3 and 4 kilograms, raising concerns about his readiness for the impending clash with Barcelona. Furthermore, the toll of participating in seven matches over a month in challenging weather conditions has left the 25-year-old Nigerian forward with lingering recovery needs.

With doubts surrounding Osimhen's availability, Napoli's manager, Luciano Spalletti, may find himself contemplating alternatives like Giovanni Simeone or Giacomo Raspadori to step up in his absence. The looming uncertainty adds a layer of complexity to Napoli's preparations as they gear up to welcome Barcelona to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Tuesday, February 21st.

Victor Osimhen Cleared To Play Against South Africa In AFCON Semi-Final

Good news for Super Eagles fans, as Victor Osimhen has been given the green light to participate in Wednesday's semi-final showdown against South Africa at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Osimhen's availability for the crucial match was uncertain after he missed the team's journey to Bouake on Monday night due to abdominal discomfort.

During his pre-match press conference earlier today, head coach Jose Peseiro refrained from confirming Osimhen's participation, stating, "Until now, I cannot answer right because it is about health. This afternoon, I can know better if he can play or not."

However, recent reports indicate Osimhen is en route to Bouake to rejoin his teammates. Despite his initial setback, the 25-year-old forward has been a key player for the Super Eagles, contributing one goal and one assist in five appearances at the ongoing AFCON 2023 finals.

The Super Eagles will undergo their final training session tonight at the Stade Annexe, Bouake, gearing up for their clash against the Bafana Bafana. With Osimhen's return to the squad, Nigerian fans can look forward to an exciting and competitive semi-final match.

AFCON: Osimhen’s Participation In South Africa Match Uncertain

There are mounting concerns regarding the participation of striker Victor Osimhen in the Super Eagles' upcoming Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash against South Africa.

The Napoli striker is reportedly experiencing abdominal discomfort and has not accompanied the team to Bouaké, the venue for Wednesday's crucial match.

A statement released by the team on Monday revealed that Osimhen could join the squad on Tuesday, pending clearance from the team's medical staff. The 25-year-old forward has been placed under close observation by the medical team, with one member remaining in Abidjan to monitor his condition.

The statement further explained, "Team members travelled from Abidjan to Bouaké today via a 10 pm Air Cote D’Ivoire flight. Osimhen did not, however, make the trip due to abdominal discomfort. Team medics confirmed he was under close watch with a medical team member staying behind in Abidjan. If cleared by tomorrow morning, he will join the rest of the squad before 5 pm."

Despite scoring just one goal in the tournament thus far, Osimhen has been a standout performer for the Eagles. His partnership upfront with Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon has been instrumental in the team's journey to their 16th AFCON semi-final.

Nigeria is scheduled to face South Africa at the Stade De La Paix in Bouake at 6 pm, and the potential absence of Osimhen could be a significant blow to their aspirations in the competition.

‘Win AFCON And I’m Done!’ Osimhen Dreams Of Triumph With Nigeria

Victor Osimhen, who clinched the Serie A title with Napoli and secured the African Footballer of the Year title in 2023, now sets his sights on lifting the Cup of Nations with Nigeria, believing it could surpass all his achievements.

The 25-year-old striker expressed his anticipation while speaking with AFP in Abidjan, where the Super Eagles are gearing up to face Ivory Coast in their second group game at the AFCON on Thursday.

Reflecting on his accomplishments with Napoli, including scoring 26 goals last season to secure their first Scudetto since 1990, Osimhen acknowledged the historical significance but emphasized the unique importance of winning the AFCON. He admitted, “I have done that with Napoli; I have made history, but no matter what I do, no matter how many goals I have scored, to be able to win the AFCON, I would go a long way in my life but probably when I do that I am done.”

Osimhen, the focal point of attention in the Nigerian squad, assured that he could handle the pressure, citing his lifelong habit of aiming high. Speaking from the Nigerian team hotel overlooking Abidjan’s Cocody Bay, he asserted, “I am the kind of person who doesn’t fold under pressure. As the pressure comes, I take it into my head to try to give my best and do well for myself.”

Acknowledging the dreams of every young African player, Osimhen expressed gratitude for winning the African Player of the Year award, emphasising the hard work, sweat, and tears that went into achieving the accolade. Despite the attention and expectations, Osimhen appeared relaxed, having just concluded an interview with Emmanuel Adebayor, Togo's 2008 African Footballer of the Year.
