Lille to assess Osimhen’s knee injury

Victor Osimhen will be assessed in the next 48 hours after he limped off in Nigeria’s 4-2 win over Lesotho in Sunday’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Maseru.

Osimhen copped a knee injury in a challenge with a Lesotho midfielder in the encounter he scored a brace and bagged two assists.

“We don’t know yet the extent of the injury but he will be assessed as soon as he arrives at his club in the next 24-48 hours to see the scale of the injury,” Osimhen’s representative Ariyo Igbayiola told our correspondent.

Osimhen has been Lille’s biggest success stories this season and so the sight of his late injury in Nigeria’s 4-2 win in Sunday’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier is of significant concern.

The 20-year-old Nigeria international has been prolific for Lille this season scoring nine goals in 17 games and has scored four goals and two assists in nine games for the Eagles having made his debut for Gernot Rohr’s side in 2019.

He is expected to miss Lille’s Ligue 1 clash against Paris Saint Germain this Friday due to suspension.

Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen is on the radar of two English Premier League clubs, Manchester United and Newcastle United.

The report comes days after the 20-year- old was linked with a move to Barcelona.

“Barcelona and Manchester United, in particular, follow him regularly,” a report in the French newspaper, La Voix du Nord, reads.

English tabloid, Chronicle, also said Newcastle coach Steve Bruce has been handed enough war chest to boost the squad in the coming transfer window.

“Newcastle United scouts are therefore keeping tabs on Osimhen. The club’s winter talent search is well underway as head of recruitment Steve Nickson and his team look to compile a list of options for Steve Bruce in the next couple of windows,” The Chronicle said.Osimhen has been in blistering form since joining Lille from Sporting Charleroi for €12m in August, scoring eight goals and providing two assists in 12 appearances for Lille.

The striker recently won the Ligue 1 Player of the Month Award for September, on Thursday, beating Monaco’s Islam Slimani and Nantes defender Nicolas Pallois.

Lille striker, Victor Osimhen, has been voted Ligue 1 Player of The Month of September ahead of Algerian forward, Islam Slimani (Monaco) and Nantes’ Nicolas Pallois.

The 20-year-old scored two goals in four league appearances for Lille in September.

He was on target in Lille’s 2-1 win against Angers SCO and the 2-0 victory at home to Strasbourg.

The former Wolfsburg striker, who was named Lille Player of The Month for August and September, has scored seven goals and recorded two assists in nine league appearances for Los Dogues this season.

With the impressive figure, the Nigeria international was also named as the fourth most decisive player of the five major European leagues, with Bayern Munich Robert Lewandowski topping the list and Manchester City duo Sergio Agüero and Kevin De Bruyne finishing second and third respectively.

Osimhen dedicated the award to God.

“Player of the month of September, major thanks to those who voted for me, I appreciate each and every one of you, special gratitude goes to my family, teammates and my loved ones. God is the greatest. We move,” he tweeted.

Before the award, the Nigerian had written on Instagram, “The goal is to keep improving.”

Lille took to their Twitter handle to celebrate the forward.

Osimhen is reportedly a target for Spanish giants Barcelona, following his heroics at Lille.
