Senate Makes U-Turn, Gives Inec Power To Transmit Election Results Electronically

The National Assembly where the senate has reversed its stance on the electoral act amendment bill and has empowered the Independent National Electoral Commission to determine the best mode to transmit election results.

The electoral commission will now have to decide how to transmit election results — either electronically or manually.

The upper legislative chamber during plenary today also approved that all political parties must use the direct primary mode in picking candidates.

The senate approved four clauses in the electoral act amendment bill.

While speaking on Inspiration FM, All Out Politics, human rights lawyer, Liborous Oshoma said the constitution is clear on the power given to INEC in the conduct of elections in the country.

He also noted the senate eventually allowed good reason to prevail after its failure to use the back door to deny INEC of her constitutional mandate.

Senate Approves Direct Primaries For Political Parties

The Senate today approved direct primaries for aspirants to all elective positions.

This comes the upper legislative chamber empowered the Independent National Electoral Commission to determine the procedure for the transmission of results during the general elections.

The amendments were made by the Senate to some clauses of the Electoral Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) bill 2021, passed on July 15, 2021, according to a statement.

The chamber approved Clause 87 to read “a political party seeking to nominate candidates for elections under this bill shall hold direct primaries for aspirants to all elective positions, which shall be monitored by the Commission.”

The chamber explained that the decision to subject the amended clauses of the bill to re-committal was reached after critical examination by the Senate Committee on INEC.

Senate Tells International Oil Companies To Relocate Headquarters To Niger Delta

The senate has told international oil companies (IOCs) operating in the Niger Delta region to relocate their headquarters to their states of operation.

Passing this resolution during plenary session following the adoption of a motion sponsored by Albert Akpan, a lawmaker from Awka Ibom, the upper legislative chamber, was ostensibly reacting to calls by the oil-producing states for the relocation of the IOCs and their subsidiaries from Lagos and Abuja to the south-south region.

Championing the debate on the motion, Akpan said the relocation of the IOCs to their host communities will facilitate development in the areas.

Senate Reinstates Sacked FUOYE Registrar, Olatunbosun Odusanya

Mr. Olatunbosun Odusanya, whose appointment as Registrar, Federal University, Oye Ekiti, was terminated by the institution’s council on April 25, said on Tuesday that the Senate order reinstating him was confirmation he was wrongly sacked.

Odusanya said, “My appointment was wrongfully terminated. I petitioned the university chairman, Dr, Mohammed Yahuza and the vice chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, before the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

“The Senate looked at the petition and said that the allegations against me were not strong enough to sack me and consequently ordered the university authorities on Tuesday to reinstate me within seven days.”

Odusanya, who spoke in a chat, said that the committee also ordered the university to reinstate the sacked bursar, Mrs. Bolatito Akande, within seven days.

He said, “The Senate made the pronouncement today (Tuesday) that I, Olatunbosun Odusanya, should be reinstated as Registrar, while Mrs. Bolatito Akande should also be reinstated as bursar and ordered FUOYE to report back to them within seven days.

“What happened at the Senate on Tuesday is confirmation of the fact that I was wrongly sacked by the council. The Senate looked at my petition and granted my request.

“The Senate also looked at Mrs. Akande’s petition and granted her request. I am happy.”

The university council, which initially suspended Odusanya from office in April 20 to pave way for investigation into the allegations of misconduct levelled against him over irregularities in appointments between 1st August 2020 and 10th February 2021, sacked him on April 25.
