May 9, 2024 Delta State Governor Oborevwori Announces Withdrawal Of Military From Okuama Community

Delta State Governor Oborevwori Announces Withdrawal Of Military From Okuama Community

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State made a significant announcement on Wednesday, declaring the complete withdrawal of military presence from the Okuama community in the state. Speaking at a press conference held at the Government House in Asaba, the governor conveyed that this decision signifies the readiness for the displaced people of Okuama to resume their lives in their homes.

Furthermore, Governor Oborevwori revealed that his administration has established an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp to facilitate the smooth resettlement of the displaced residents of Okuama. This initiative aims to ensure their seamless transition back to their community.

The military had occupied Okuama following the tragic incident on March 14, 2024, where 17 Army personnel lost their lives in the riverine community located in the Ughelli South Local Government Area. This unfortunate event compelled many residents to flee to the creeks and neighboring communities for safety.

The fallen personnel, including the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion, two majors, one captain, and 12 battalion personnel, were laid to rest at the Military Cemetery in Abuja.

With the governor's announcement, it is anticipated that the residents will gradually return to Okuama to rebuild and restore their community.

My Dear Good People of Delta State.

I have the pleasure of announcing to you that upon many deliberations and collaborations between the State Government and the Military Leadership, the Nigerian Army has agreed to withdraw its Officers and men from Okuama. I spoke with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja on Monday, 6th of May, and as of today, 8 of May, 2024, the Military has withdrawn from Okuama. With this development, the people of Okuama can now safely return to their homes and begin the process of reintegration and rebuilding their homes.

I want to express my deep and profound gratitude to Mr. President, the COAS, and the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army for their understanding and cooperation. In my engagements with them, they demonstrated the highest level of concern and care for the plight of the displaced persons. To God be the glory that we have achieved an amicable resolution.

I also extend my gratitude to members of the National Assembly, distinguished Nigerians, our traditional rulers, and other leaders of thought who stood with us in our travails. Your words of encouragement and prayers are greatly appreciated.

Let me assure all Deltans and residents in the state that this administration is irrevocably committed to enhanced peace and security in the state as contained in our MORE agenda. It is also pertinent to point out that matters of security are better handled with tact, wisdom, and patience; it is not meant to be a subject of daily media discuss as some would have wanted.

As the people of Okuama start the process of returning to their homes, I pledge the commitment of the Delta State Government to make that process smooth and seamless. After a personal assessment of the community on 20th of April, 2024, we have since commenced setting up an Internally Displaced Persons camp at Ewu to serve as transition to aid their rehabilitation. We shall render all the necessary assistance they need to enable them settle down quickly and joyfully in Okuama.

Over 1,100 Killed In Israel, Gaza

In the early hours of Monday, Israel continued its relentless assault on the Gaza Strip amid ongoing fighting with Hamas, pushing the death toll from the conflict with Palestinian militants to over 1,100.

During overnight clashes, the Israeli army reported striking more than 500 targets in the besieged and impoverished Gaza Strip. At the same time, skirmishes persisted in seven to eight locations inside Israel near the enclave.

This escalation followed a massive attack by Hamas just two days prior when they launched a barrage of rockets and sent fighters into Israel, resulting in the deaths of civilians and the abduction of at least 100 hostages—an action that caught Israel by surprise. Consequently, the Israeli government officially declared war on the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a sobering warning to Israel, urging the nation to prepare for a "long and difficult" conflict. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that over 700 Israelis have lost their lives since the launch of Hamas's large-scale attack, with another 1,200 people critically wounded.

In retaliation, Israeli airstrikes continued to pound the densely populated and blockaded Gaza Strip, home to 2.3 million people, resulting in at least 413 Palestinian fatalities. The IDF revealed that overnight, fighter jets, helicopters, aircraft, and artillery targeted more than 500 sites affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza.

Military spokesperson Richard Hecht informed reporters that combat operations were ongoing, with Israeli forces engaged in battles against terrorists in seven to eight locations around Gaza. He expressed hope for regaining full control by the end of the day, although the situation remained fluid.

As thick plumes of smoke billowed from the Palestinian enclave, the conflict showed no signs of abating. Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, an army spokesman, estimated that approximately 1,000 Palestinian militants participated in Hamas's Saturday assault—an event he described as "by far the worst day in Israeli history." He emphasised the unprecedented scale of casualties, likening it to "a 9/11 and a Pearl Harbor wrapped into one."

To address the crisis, Israel deployed around 100,000 reserve troops to the southern regions as they continued their efforts to expel Hamas fighters from Israeli territory. Additionally, Conricus reported that a "very large number" of Israeli civilians and soldiers remained held inside Gaza, underscoring the complexity and urgency of the situation.

Tinubu Seeks Nine-Month Transition For Niger Junta

President Bola Tinubu has suggested that nine months is enough for the Niger military junta to return the country to civilian rule after seizing power from President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.

The President said this when he received the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Third, at the State House, Abuja.

According to the Nigerian leader, who is also the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), if Nigeria could successfully return to democracy in 1999 through a nine-month programme by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Niger coup leaders could do so too.

In a statement by his Spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu said sanctions imposed on Niger Republic won’t be lifted without “positive adjustments” by the military junta.

The Niger coupists have said they need a three-year transition period to restore constitutional order in the country, a position ECOWAS rejected.

With the coup in Gabon on Wednesday, Tinubu said his fears that other countries will copy what happened in Niger was confirmed.

Speaking later after the visit, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, explained the reason for the visit.

A member of the NSCIA delegation and JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishak Oloyede, also spoke.
