EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa Testifies In ₦1.4bn Oil Subsidy Trial

The trial of ABUBAKAR ALI PETERS and his company, Nadabo Energy Limited, for an alleged ₦1.4bn fraud continued yesterday before Justice CHRISTOPHER BALOGUN of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja.

During sitting, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, ABDULRASHEED BAWA, made history as the first chairman of the Commission to give evidence in Court.

BAWA, who is testifying as the fifth prosecution witness, PW5, had begun his examination-in-chief on June 3, 2015, long before his appointment as the EFCC Chairman.

Before the proceedings, BAWA had given evidence against the defendants, who pleaded “not guilty” to the alleged fraud, stating that Nababo Energy Limited allegedly obtained the sum of ₦1,4bn from the Federal Government as oil subsidy with forged documents.

Centre For Anti-Corruption And Open Leadership Calls For Probe Oba Of Lagos Over Claim That Huge Sums Of Money Was Stolen When His Palace Was Ransacked During Endsars Protest.

The Oba of Lagos RILWAN AKIOLU may have landed himself into trouble over claim that huge sums of money was stolen when his Palace was ransacked by hoodlums during the ENDSARS protest .

This is because the Centre for anticorruption and open leadership is calling on the EFCC to probe how the traditional ruler got such amount of money.

You will recall that Oba RILWAN AKIOLU said that $2m and N17m was stolen from his Iga Iduganran Palace in October 2020 during the ENDSARS saga.

The Executive Chairman of the Centre Mr. DEBO ADENIRAN said the money declared by the Oba was beyond what the constitution allows an individual to keep in the house.

The anti corruption crusader also reacted to the alleged move by the EFCC to reopen investigation into past corruption cases against the APC National Leader, BOLA TINUBU.

DEBO ADENIRAN noted that nothing is wrong with such move so long it wasn't selective and to witch hunt TINUBU.

Fred Nzeako Asks New EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa Not To Be Selective In Handling Corruption Cases

The newly confirmed EFCC Chairman, ABDULRASHEED BAWA has been urged not to be selective in handling corruption cases by the agency.

He was also advised to live above board and avoid playing to the gallery of the powers that be.

Constitutional lawyer, FRED NZEAKO and the Executive Director of the Development Specs Agency, OKEY IKECHUKWU gave this advise on a monitored program in reaction to the senate confirmation of BAWA.

According to FRED NZEAKO, one of the first tasks before BAWA is to put an end to inter-agency rivalry with the ICPC.

On his part, OKEY IKECHUKWU said the EFCC boss should do away with unnecessary media trial during his reign.

ABDULRASHEED BAWA was grilled by the Senators before his confirmation.

Responding to some of the questions, BAWA, denied selling recovered assets while serving as Port Harcourt Zonal Officer of the EFCC.

He also denied that he was arrested by former acting EFCC Chairman, IBRAHIM MAGU for undisclosed reasons.

‘I Was Never Arrested For Corruption,’ EFCC Boss Bawa Says

Bawa hopes to leave the EFCC a better and more transparent place.

The new chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, says he's never been arrested on corruption allegations before.

President Muhammadu Buhari wrote the National Assembly on February 16, 2021 to request Bawa's confirmation as EFCC chief, but he's been dogged by corruption allegations.

Peoples Gazette, an online news platform, reported last year that the 40-year-old was detained for alleged theft of confiscated proceeds of ill-gotten loot when he was heading the Port Harcourt zonal office of the EFCC.

The anti-graft agency has since dismissed the allegation since his appointment was announced, noting that the sale of the forfeited trucks was conducted after Bawa left the Port Harcourt division.

Bawa repeated the denial during his screening before senators in the upper chamber of the National Assembly on Wednesday, February 24.

He said he wasn't involved in any probe, and that he shares a cordial relationship with the former boss of the agency, Ibrahim Magu.

During nearly two hours of questioning, Bawa answered numerous questions from lawmakers ranging from the operations of the EFCC, process of asset forfeiture, management and disposal, and prosecution of offenders.

He said he hopes to leave the EFCC a better and more transparent place at the end of his tenure, if confirmed.

"I am going to give the young people a very good representation in the governance of this country so that more young people will be given more responsibility in this country," he said.

Many lawmakers praised Bawa for his years of service, and noted that his appointment is a manifestation of the demands of young Nigerians to occupy top leadership positions.

Senators approved his appointment in a unanimous vote.

He will take over from Mohammed Umar Abba who was appointed acting chairman last year to replace Magu who was indicted for numerous corruption allegations.

President Buhari is yet to act on the report of a committee that investigated the allegations against Magu who was acting chairman for five years because the Senate refused to confirm his appointment.
