Torres Double Helps Barcelona Ease Past Osasuna

Ferran Torres scored twice as Barcelona continued their impressive run of form by beating Osasuna for a fourth La Liga win in a row.

Former Manchester City striker Torres opened the scoring early on from the penalty spot after Gavi was fouled.

He got his second soon after with a clinical finish following a great through ball by Ousmane Dembele.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang stabbed in from another Dembele assist before substitute Riqui Puig added a fourth.

The 22-year-old showed great composure after his initial shot had been parried, taking the ball round the goalkeeper and cutting inside two defenders before curling in.

Aubameyang’s goal, meanwhile, was his fifth in six La Liga games since joining from Arsenal, making him the second-fastest Barcelona player to reach five goals in the competition in the 21st century, after Samuel Eto’o in 2004 and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2009.

The win moved Barcelona up to third on 51 points, although they remain way off the pace in the title battle with leaders Real Madrid on 63 points.

Barcelona Frustrated By Stubborn Galatasaray

Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by Galatasaray in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie.

Frenkie de Jong went closest for the La Liga side when he struck the post in the second half from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s overhead kick.

Former Swansea striker Bafetimbi Gomis thought he had earned the visitors an unlikely late win but his sublime finish was ruled out for offside.

Memphis Depay twice went close to giving Xavi’s side a first-half lead.

The Dutchman’s curling free-kick was saved by Galatasaray goalkeeper Inaki Pena, before Depay was denied again by the Barcelona loanee with a low drive that was heading for the far corner.

Jordi Alba also sent a first-time effort inches wide of the far post as Galatasaray held on to keep the tie level ahead of next week’s second leg in Turkey.

Barcelona Substitutes Impress In Win Over Elche

Former Manchester City forward Ferran Torres, brought on as a substitute inspired Barcelona as they came from behind to maintain their fine recent form with a win over mid-table Elche.

The home side got the opener courtesy a well taken strike by Fidel and Barcelona trailed at the break. Torres was brought on in the 2nd half by head coach Xavi and the Spain international equalised with an instinctive finish.

The 22-year old could have added more but he was thwarted by Elche keeper Edgar Badia who was in fine form between the sticks.

The Blaugrana now have scored four times in four of their last six games, with January signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netting in each of his four La Liga games prior.

Unfortunately, the Gabon international could not find the back of the net in the tie as he was kept at bay, Barca initially struggled to impose themselves and Elche led at the break through Fidel’s fine finish.

Aubameyang was sacrificed for Depay and the Dutchman forced the error as  Antonio Barragan had a handball in the box, with a penalty subsequently awarded after the referee consulted the pitch side monitor.

Depay converted the penalty late on to secure three vital points and move Barca up to third in La Liga above Real Betis, who lost to fourth-placed Atletico.

Impressive Barcelona Ease Past Napoli

Barcelona put in an impressive performance to beat Napoli and reach the Europa League last 16.

They led by two goals when Jordi Alba finished off a counter-attack from Adama Traore’s ball and Frenkie de Jong curled in a stunning shot.

Lorenzo Insigne gave Napoli hope with a penalty to make it 3-2 on aggregate.

But Gerard Pique scored and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired into the top corner from Traore’s pass, with Matteo Politano netting a late consolation.

Barcelona will discover their last-16 opponents – one of the Europa League group winners – in Friday’s draw.

Both sets of players stood with a banner saying ‘Stop War’ before kick-off in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
