Ex-Chelsea Boss Graham Potter Turns Down Lyon Job

Former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter has declined the opportunity to take charge at Lyon.

The Ligue 1 club made him their first choice to try to oversee a major restructure in eastern France. Still, while Potter met with, and was impressed by, Lyon's owner, John Textor, he has ultimately decided it is not the right time to move back into management.

Lyon's American owner has big ambitions for the club, and with the club bottom of the table, he plans to invest heavily in the squad and facilities over the coming months and years.

It is thought Lyon will now turn their attention to current Lille boss Paulo Fonseca and Julen Lopetegui, who left Wolves in August.

Potter has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea in April, only 31 games into a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge. At the time, the club were 11th in the Premier League and finished outside the top half for the first time since 1996.

Before that, the 48-year-old had been in continuous work since 2011, leading Ostersunds from the Swedish fourth tier to the top flight and European football.

Also, on the 30-man shortlist are Antoine Griezmann, Martin Odegaard, Luka Modric, Ilkay Gundogan, Vinicius Junior and Robert Lewandowski.

In the women’s category, Oshoala will also hope to beat off competition from 29 players to land the award.

Osimhen became the first-ever African to finish top scorer in Serie A last season, netting 26 goals in 32 games, as Napoli won its first league title since 1990.

The Super Eagles striker was also named the best foreign athlete in Italy last campaign.

For Oshoala, she contributed to Barcelona winning the Spanish women’s league, scoring 21 goals in 28 games.

Also, she played her part as Barcelona won the UEFA women’s Champions League last season.

Also, she helped Nigeria’s Super Falcons reach the round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The winners of the 2023 Ballon d’Or award for both men and women will be known at a ceremony in Paris, France, on Monday, October 30.

Former Leicester Keeper Kasper Schmeichel Joins Anderlecht On A One-Year Deal

Former Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has signed a one-year contract with Belgian side Anderlecht.

The 36-year-old was a free agent after leaving Nice by mutual consent last week, which meant he could join a new club outside the transfer window.

"Anderlecht is just a massive club," said the Denmark goalkeeper.

"Former teammates from different places have always talked so highly and warmly of this place. It was something I really wanted to become part of."

Schmeichel made 46 appearances in all competitions for Nice last season after joining the Ligue 1 side on a free transfer from Leicester.

The goalkeeper, who has 93 caps, made 479 appearances in 11 years with the Foxes, during which time he won the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield.

September 6, 2023 Ex-Spain Coach Jorge Vilda Calls Post-World Cup Sacking Unfair

Ex-Spain Coach Jorge Vilda Calls Post-World Cup Sacking Unfair

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) dismissed Vilda on Tuesday, with Montse Tome named his successor.

Vilda's exit came amid the fallout after the behaviour of RFEF president Luis Rubiales at the World Cup final.

"In sporting terms, I am going to accept all the criticisms, but on a personal level, I think it has been unfair," Vilda, 42, told Cadena SER.

"It has been a special year. Nothing has ever been said directly, but indirectly, things have been said that do not suit me. Things have been said that are not true."

Spain beat England in the World Cup final on 20 August, but the win was overshadowed by Rubiales kissing forward Jenni Hermoso, which she has said was not consensual.

Most of Vilda's coaching staff resigned, and 81 players refused to play for Spain in the aftermath.

Rubiales has refused to resign but has been provisionally suspended by Fifa, football's world governing body, with Pedro Rocha appointed interim president.
