FJSC Nominates 22 Justices For Elevation To Supreme Court

A list of 22 Justices of the Court of Appeal nominated by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) for elevation to the Supreme Court, has been sent to the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The names of the nominees, who hail from various regions in the country, were revealed in an FJSC document.

The North-Central region has six nominees, while the South-West and South-South regions have two nominees each. The South-East region also has six nominees, and the North-East has two nominees.

The development is coming after the retirement of Justices Amina Augie and Mohammed Datijo which left the Supreme Court with only 10 serving justices.

In a swift reaction, however, the National Judicial Council has said it is not aware of the shortlist of 22 justices made by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) for the bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

NJC Director of Information, Barrister Soji Oye, said the nomination has not been brought to his knowledge.

CBN Says Old Naira Notes Remain Legal Tender Indefinitely

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has said the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes will remain legal tender indefinitely and no longer have a deadline

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the bank’s Director of Corporate Communications Isa Abdulmumin where it made known its intention to extend the validity of old naira notes beyond any expiry date.

In March 2023, the Supreme Court had extended the deadline to phase out the old naira notes to December 31, 2023.

According to the bank, it is working with the relevant authorities to vacate the subsisting court ruling on the same subject.

While explaining that the move is in line with international best practices and “to forestall a repeat of earlier experiences, the bank said it will continue to issue and accept all denominations of the bank notes, old and redesigned, to and from deposit money banks (DMBs).

The CBN there encouraged the general public to embrace alternative modes of payment such as e-channels, for day-to-day transactions.

The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has extended an olive branch to his opponents, including Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and Athan Achonu of the Labour Party (LP), who came second and third, respectively.

He made the call in his acceptance speech a day after his declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of the off-cycle governorship election in the state.

In a live broadcast from Owerri, the state capital, Uzodimma said with the result, ultimately, it is the “Imo people that won”.

He added that the victory was from God, who, according to him, was also responsible for his first-term victory when a Supreme Court ruling declared him as the winner, unseating Emeka Ihedioha.

I Am Not Going Away, Atiku Says After Supreme Court Verdict On Tinubu

The Candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25, 2023, presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, has said he will not abandon partisan politics in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict that dismissed his petition and affirmed the victory of President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking at a Press briefing in Abuja, the former Vice President promised to continue the struggle with other Nigerians to deepen Nigeria’s democracy.

Atiku stated that though the apex court’s judgment is final, it leaves much to be desired.

Speaking further, he proposed an amendment to the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022 to accommodate a six-year single term for a president for each of the six geopolitical zones.

He added that the law must mandate electronic voting and collation of results and compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to verify credentials submitted by candidates vying for political offices, amongst others.
