Spain Reach Quarter-Final After Thrilling Extra-Time Win Over Croatia

Spain reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 in dramatic fashion by beating Croatia in extra time after an eight-goal thriller.

Luis Enrique's side were rocked when Croatia substitutes Mislav Orsic and Mario Pasalic scored twice in the final five minutes to come back from 3-1 down and force extra time, but Spain rallied as the added 30 minutes produced yet more drama.

Striker Alvaro Morata, who revealed before the match that his his family have been threatened during the tournament as a result of his performances, silenced his critics when he thumped in Spain's fourth goal in extra time in Copenhagen.

The scoring did not end there as Mikel Oyarzabal added a fifth goal three minutes later to finally see off Croatia, who had fought bravely in this highly entertaining last-16 tie.

In a hint of what was to come, 20 minutes into the game goalkeeper Unai Simon failed to control Pedri's 49-yard back pass, presenting Croatia with the lead.

That bizarre own goal sparked a response from Spain though, with Pablo Sarabia thumping in an equaliser, Cesar Azpilicueta heading in another and Ferran Torres making it 3-1.

Spain looked comfortable and poised to cruise through but Croatia burst into action through their substitutes late on to force added time.

The thrilling moments continued as Simon made up for his earlier error with a heroic stop from close range to deny Andrej Kramaric before Morata went up the other end to crucially put Spain ahead again.

It was the most entertaining match of the tournament to date and three-time champions Spain will face Switzerland - after they beat France in another brilliant match - in the quarter-finals.

Wasteful Spain Held By Sweden

Spain endured a frustrating opening game in Euro 2020 as they failed to make their near total dominance pay against a rigid and stubborn Sweden in Seville.

Luis Enrique's side had the vast majority of possession - 85% - and territory in the match, which at times resembled a session of attack versus defence, but were unable to take advantage of the good opportunities their build-up play yielded.

The best fell to Alvaro Morata, who was allowed in on goal by a fluffed attempted clearance from Marcus Danielson but side-footed his shot wide.

Dani Olmo also saw a close-range header tipped round the post by Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen, and Koke sliced an effort off target from inside the box.

Sweden's best chance fell to La Liga's young player of the year Alexander Isak, who muscled his way in for a shot that deflected off a Spanish defender, hit the post and looped straight to grateful keeper Unai Simon.

Isak also fashioned a great opportunity for partner Marcus Berg, who somehow managed to steer a shot from near point-blank range wide at the back post.

The result will do little to lift the downbeat mood of some of the Spanish public, who have seen the preparations of their national side overshadowed by the fallout of positive Covid-19 tests for two players and squad selection controversy.

The draw in Seville means Slovakia have the early advantage in Group E courtesy of their surprise 2-1 win over Poland earlier on Monday.

Spain’s Youngsters Run Riot Against Lithuania In Friendly

A Spain side made up of under-21s players claimed a comfortable win against Lithuania in their final friendly before Euro 2020.

No senior players featured after captain Sergio Busquets had tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday.

However, the youthful Spain side still had too much for their opponents as they led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Hugo Guillamon and Brahim Diaz.

Juan Miranda made it 3-0 before Javi Puado got a fourth late on.

Spain's starting XI contained 10 debutants with Eibar's Bryan Gil the only previously capped player.

It was also the youngest-ever side fielded in their history, with an average age of 22 years and 102 days.

Spain begin their Group E campaign against Sweden in Seville on 14 June, before playing Poland (19 June) and Slovakia (23 June).

Sergio Ramos Left Out Of Spain Squad For Euro 2020

Sergio Ramos has been left out of Spain boss Luis Enrique's Euro 2020 squad.

Real Madrid centre-back Ramos, 35, has been struggling with injury and has only played one game since the end of March.

His absence means there are no players from Real Madrid picked by Enrique for this summer's delayed tournament.

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte had his switch from France to Spain approved by Fifa recently and he makes the 24-man squad.

He is one of 10 players from the Premier League picked by Enrique, including Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez, Leeds United defender Diego Llorente and Wolves forward Adama Traore.

Ramos played for Spain in World Cup qualifiers in March when he was substituted during a draw with Greece and came on late in a win over Kosovo.

Since then, his only appearance for Real Madrid came in a Champions League semi-final second-leg defeat by Chelsea on 5 May.

That outing was only his fifth for the Bernabeu club this year.

Enrique could have picked a 26-man squad instead of the usual 23 after Uefa brought in the change to lessen the load on players after a club season compressed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The tournament is taking place between 11 June and 11 July, having been delayed by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Spain are in Group E along with Poland, Slovakia and Sweden.
