Roger Federer Impresses On French Open Return

Roger Federer eased through his French Open return with a straight-set win over Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion had not played at Roland Garros since 2019 and was playing his first match at a major in 16 months after a knee injury.

The 39-year-old Swiss played smoothly and confidently as he won 6-2 6-4 6-3.

Meanwhile, Russian second seed Daniil Medvedev ended his misery at Roland Garros as he beat Alexander Bublik for his first win on the Paris clay.

Medvedev, 25, won 6-3 6-3 7-5 against Kazakhstan's Bublik, ending a run of four successive defeats in round one.

Elsewhere in the men's singles draw on Monday, Croatia's Marin Cilic set up a second-round meeting with Federer following a 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 6-2 win against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.

Belgian 13th seed David Goffin was beaten in straight sets by Italian 19-year-old Lorenzo Musetti, the Lyon Open semi-finalist winning 6-0 7-5 7-6 (7-3) to claim his first victory at a Grand Slam.

Norwegian 15th seed Casper Ruud, 22, overcame Benoit Paire 5-7 6-2 6-1 7-6 (7-4), while John Isner won an all-American match against Sam Querrey 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-4.

Rodger Federer To Play At French Open

Roger Federer has confirmed he will play in this year's French Open as he continues his return from injury.

Federer, 39, is making his comeback after two knee operations and has not played a Grand Slam since January 2020.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner made his return after 14 moths out at last month's Qatar Open but has not played since.

On Sunday, he said will play the clay-court Geneva Open in May followed by Roland Garros, which begins on 30 May.

Federer, who won his only French Open title in 2009, overcame Britain's Dan Evans in his comeback match in Doha last month but was then beaten by Nikoloz Basilashvili in the next round.

After losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2020 Australian Open, he had an operation on his right knee and after a further setback was ruled out of the entire coronavirus-hit season.

He had hoped to return at this year's Australian Open in January but "ran out f time" to regain fitness.

Federer sat out three consecutive French Opens from 2016 because of injury and a wish to manage his workload but returned in 2019, reaching the semi-finals.

Rafael Nadal won last year's men's singles title at Roland Garros to equal Federer's haul of 20 Grand Slams.

Roger Federer lost his second match since returning from a 14-month injury lay-off, going out to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner was overcome by Georgia's Basilashvili 3-6 6-1 7-5 in Doha.

Federer had beaten Britain's Dan Evans on his return to action on Wednesday to reach the last eight.

Basilashvili saved a match point before going on to beat the Swiss 39-year-old.

After Federer missed his chance of victory in the 10th game of the deciding set, world number 42 Basilashvili went on to break the three-time Qatar Open winner in the ensuing game and eventually prevailed in one hour and 50 minutes.

Federer, in competitive action for the first time since January 2020 after two knee surgeries, said playing two matches in two days was "a good stepping stone" in his recovery.

Roger Federer moved into the ATP Finals last four at the expense of Novak Djokovic with a scintillating win over his great rival at the O2 Arena.

Swiss third seed Federer, 38, won 6-4 6-3 in a round-robin match which eliminates the Serb second seed from the season-ending tournament in London.

Federer will meet top seed Rafael Nadal or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last four.

Djokovic’s defeat also means Spain’s Nadal is guaranteed to finish as the year-end world number one.

Nadal, 33, is far from certain of reaching the last four himself, needing victory over Greek sixth seed Tsitsipas on Friday to have any chance.

However, if German seventh seed Alexander Zverev beats Russian fourth seed Daniil Medvedev then Nadal is out regardless of his result.

If results do go his way then Nadal will top the Andre Agassi Group and face Federer – who has finished second behind Austrian fifth seed Dominic Thiem in the Bjorn Borg Group – in Saturday’s semi-final.

Six-time champion Federer, who lost his opening match to Thiem, jumped for joy after clinching a victory which goes some way to avenging his defeat by Djokovic in an epic Wimbledon final in July.
