Martins slumps, dies in Nasarawa, Katsina clash

Nasarawa United defender Chineme Martins died after slumping in their Nigeria Professional Football League tie against Katsina United in Lafia on Sunday.

An eyewitness, who was at the Lafia Township Stadium, said the late defender was standing alone when he slumped in the 45th minute.

The match was watched by Nasawara State Governor Abdullahi Sule.

According to an eye witness report, his team had been awarded a free-kick and he was standing alone in their own half when he suddenly collapsed.

Other players informed the referee and he was eventually rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Our correspondent gathered that the Peugeot 406 ambulance stationed at the match venue did not start, before the player was eventually rushed to the hospital in one of the vehicles in Governor Sule’s convoy.

According to him, the match continued after the defender was rushed to the hospital and it eventually ended 3-0 in favour of Nasarawa United.

The players were only told about Martins’ death after the game. They could not celebrate the victory as they were all crying.

Chairman of Nasarawa United Isaac Danladi also confirmed the defender’s death.

Wikki Tourists appoint Abd’Allah as new technical adviser

Nigeria Professional Football League side Wikki Tourists have announced the appointment of former Enyimba coach Usman Abd’Allah as their new manager.

The club announced his appointment in a statement signed by their media officer Nasiru Kobi.

Abd’Allah’s appointment came after Wikki’s 2-1 home loss to Sunshine Stars on Sunday.

He replaces Garba Ibrahim, who was redeployed to the sports council.

Others appointed are Haruna Abubakar as new goalkeepers trainer and Dantani Yahaya as Trainer 2.

Goalkeeper trainer Bala Mohammed the goalkeepers trainer, who was a contract staff with the club, was disengaged.

Abd’Allah was sacked by Enyimba January 6, after the Peoples Elephant lost 4-0 to Plateau United in the NPFL in Jos.recorded during football matches.

NPFL: Kwara take over Delta Force slot

Kwara United have taken over the slot of Delta Force FC in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

With this, after a match in the 2019/20 Nigeria National League, Kwara will play in the topflight.

They will continue from week six, after formal registration of the club following the take-over.

Delta Force earlier acquired Kada City of Kaduna State before the start of the current NPFL season.

Kwara in a statement on Thursday said the agreement was sealed after a thorough discussion between the management of the two sides in Delta State, with the General Manager of Kwara, Bashir Badawiy, leading the North Central club’s negotiation team.

Kwara chairman, Clement Titiloye, said that the club was aware of the challenges of doing so, saying; “It’s a development that the stakeholders will also want to support.”

Titiloye commended the Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his support and encouragement.

“We are conscious of the challenges that will come with this massive decision, but we know it’s a situation that is redeemable, as the NPFL is just starting,” he said.

Delta are currently in 17th position on the NPFL log with four points after five matches, winning just a game, one drawn three lost three, with minus five goals difference.

Kwara got relegated at the end of last season, and was drawn in Group A2 of the on-going NNL alongside Niger Tornadoes, FC Taraba, Sokoto United, El-Kanemi Warriors, Gombe United, Yobe Desert Stars, Rarara FC, Mighty Jets, EFCC and Real Stars.

NPFL: Enyimba, Rangers win, Akwa United draw

Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Enyimba, secured their first win of the 2019/20 season following a 3-1 win over Nasarawa United in a rescheduled fixture.

Austin Oladapo scored a brace for the home side while Hamza Owolabi pulled one back for the visitors in the 56th minute from the penalty spot.

The People’s Elephant are third on the league table after two games.

In other rescheduled games, Akwa United’s wait for a first win of the season continues as they failed to beat Abia Warriors at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Thursday following a goalless draw.

However, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, Nnamdi Egbujuo’s 55th minute goal proved decisive as Enugu Rangers piped Sunshine Stars 1-0 to record their first win of the season.

Plateau United and Wikki Tourists are the early log leaders both securing wins in their first two games.
