House Of Reps Fumes, Summons Lai Mohammed Over Twitter Ban

“The House of Representatives recognises that Twitter, like other social media networks, is an important tool for communication."

During plenary on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, Speaker of the House Femi Gbajabiamila said the committees have been tasked with determining "the circumstances of the decision by the Federal Government of Nigeria to suspend the operations of Twitter in Nigeria, and the legal authority for the ban on the operations of Twitter in Nigeria."

The Speaker added that “it is in service of our obligations under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and our moral duty to the Nigerian people" to investigate why the ban was issued.

According to the Speaker, “the House of Representatives recognises that Twitter, like other social media networks, is an important tool for communication and commerce in Nigeria, particularly amongst the younger generation who have used these networks for enterprise and innovation with great success.

“The committees are additionally mandated to invite the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed to brief the House of Representatives on the objectives, intent, and duration of the suspension on the operations of Twitter in Nigeria, and to report to the House within ten days.”

The ban has been widely condemned as a suppression of free speech in Nigeria and a contravention of section 39 (1) of the nation's constitution and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights which Nigeria has ratified and domesticated.

Lai Mohammed Blames Nigerians For Decision Of Twitter To Chose Ghana As Headquarters For Its African Operations

Minister of Information, LAI MOHAMMED says Twitter chose Ghana as the headquarters for its African operations, due to the unpatriotic attitudes of some Nigerians.

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, LAI MOHAMMED said the tech giants chose Accra over Nigeria because the nation's West African neighbours are champions of democracy and abide by the rule of law.

The Minister noted that this is what you get when you de-market your country.

He further blamed the media for championing the course of devaluing Nigeria by fervently putting out negative reports and painting the country as a hell on earth.

But the PDP has described the declaration by the ruling APC that the by-passing of Nigeria by Twitter to cite its African Headquarters in Ghana further confirms Buhari Presidency's poor understanding of governance.

“Any Further Resort To Violence In The Name Of #Endsars Will Not Be Tolerated This Time”- FG Reacts

Ahead of the Saturday, February 13 proposed protest against the reopening of the Lekki tollgate, the Federal government has warned it would not tolerate any form of violence in the name of #EndSARS protest.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, stated this on Thursday February 11 at a press conference. He warned Nigerians against participating in any protest to block the toll gate, adding that security agencies have been put on the alert to curtail any protest.

''Any further resort to violence in the name of #EndSARS will not be tolerated this time. The security agents are ready for any eventuality. A situation in which six soldiers and 37 policemen were murdered in cold blood by hoodlums will not repeat itself.

The attack, looting and razing of 269 private and public property will not happen again. The killing of 57 civilians will not be re-enacted. No government anywhere will allow a repeat of the kind of destruction, killing and maiming wrought by the hijackers of #EndSARS protests last year.

After all, only one policeman – (plus four others) – was killed in the invasion of the US Capitol in January, yet the FBI has continued to hunt down and prosecute the perpetrators. No life is more important than the other.”he said

The Minister said intelligence report indicated that some of those planners are non-Nigerians

''We therefore strongly warn those who are planning to re-occupy Lekki Toll Gate on Saturday to desist. We know that many of those who have been loudest on social media in advertising the plan to reconvene in Lagos on Saturday are not even in Nigeria.

They are elsewhere around the world fanning the embers of violence and inciting gullible people back home. No one should fall for their antics.'' he said

Lai Mohammed- Nigeria’s economy is doing well compared to others despite the recession

Compared to the economies of South Africa, Russia and other countries in recession, the minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, says the Nigerian economy is doing well.

“It is true we are in a recession. Recession comes when a country records two consecutive quarters of negative growths. But we must go beyond that to understand that despite that, our economy is still very well in circumstances” Mohammed said

“The main reason why we have entered into this recession is the oil sector. The oil sector recorded -13.89% and that is the worst in 14 quarters. Of course, it is easy to understand why; with the pandemic, there is low demand for oil…but when you look at the non-oil sector which is about -2.51 % in the third quarter, it is far better than what it was in the second quarter”.

“Overall, yes, we are in a recession and it is inevitable but while our Q2 result was -6.1%, South Africa was -50% and as we speak today, Finland, Hungary, Spain, Mexico, Russia, Romania, Belgium, Austria have all fallen into recession”.

But speaking today, the minister said the government is optimistic that with its intervention measures, the recession will be short-lived.
