Don’t Set Nigeria Ablaze With Incendiary Rhetoric, FG Warns Leaders

The federal government has warned political and religious leaders to stop “spewing incendiary rhetoric” capable of setting the country ablaze.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, gave the admonition while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Sal Island, Cape Verde.

NAN reports that the minister is in Cape Verde to attend the 64th Conference of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Commission for Africa and the Second Edition of the UNWTO Global Tourism Investment Forum.

The minister also cautioned the media, particularly broadcast stations, to abide by broadcast code and other regulations guiding them.

The minister said the National Broadcasting Commission and other regulators would ensure that broadcast stations abide by statutory laws and ethics.

He said any station that violated the broadcast code and ethics would be “shown the red card“.

Lai Mohammed Denies Asking Obi Cubana To Loan Nigeria Money

The minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has denied asking Cubana Group Chairman, Obi Iyiegbu aka Obi Cubana, to loan money to Nigeria.

The Ministry of Information and Culture on its verified Facebook page on Sunday placed a ‘Fake News’ stamp on a news item claiming that the minister made the statement.

The news which was published by an online medium read in part, “Obi Cubana has this kind of money and Nigeria is borrowing money from China. Cubana should borrow us money, Nigeria is collapsing- Lai Mohammed”.

Obi Cubana has been trending on social media for the last four days for hosting a lavish funeral for his mother in Oba, a town in Idemili South local government area of Anambra State

In another report, Abba Kyari, the deputy commissioner of police who is famous for cracking major crimes visited Oba, an Anambra town, for the burial of the mother of Obinna Iyiegbu, the billionaire owner of Cubana Club.

The gist about the burial has dominated Nigeria's social media space in the past few days as musicians, actors, socialites and other top celebrities turned up for the burial on Friday, July 16.

As head of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP’s) Intelligence Response Team in 2017, Kyari led the operation that led to the arrest of Evans, a suspected billionaire kidnapper.

He has also cracked other cases that shook the country. Oba, the town in Idemili North local government area of Anambra state, is not the first place where Kyari will be seen cooling off.

Abba Kyari a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), has confirmed attending the burial of the mother of Obinna Iyiegbu, aka Obi Cubana, the billionaire owner of Cubana Club.

On his verified Facebook page Kyari described Obi Cubana as one of the most hardworking entrepreneurs he knows.

The highly respected policeman said this while giving reasons for attending the burial which was held at Oba, a town in Idemili North local government of Anambra state.

Lai Mohammed: ‘My Advice To Anyone Using VPN Is To Stop It!’

The minister is encouraging young Nigerians to see this moment as an opportunity to launch their own apps.

During an appearance at the House of Representatives this week to defend a ban that has been roundly condemned locally and internationally as a suppression of free speech, Mohammed said:

"My advice to anybody using VPN is to stop it because when you use VPN, it exposes your entire data, including your bank account...

"I am serious. So, if you are using VPN and you think you are hurting Lai Mohammed, you are hurting yourself."

The minister also added that now is a good opportunity for Nigeria's tech community to float indigenous social media apps that would be patronized by government.

"I think this is a very good opportunity for our very resourceful Nigerians to also look at how they can have an app that can replace Twitter; and it will be patronized by all of us. We've received a few approaches and we want to encourage them," Mohammed said.

The minister insists that Twitter must register to do business in Nigeria and pay taxes to Nigeria.

Talks between Twitter and Nigerian government have commenced.

We’re Ready To Talk – Twitter Writes FG Over Suspension

The Federal Government on Tuesday confirmed that Twitter has formally written to seek for dialogue on issues leading to the indefinite suspension of its operations in the country.

“I can confirm that Twitter has written the Federal Government that they are ready to talk.

“As we have always maintained, the door is not locked and we are open minded but Twitter must work toward it,” he said.

The minister reiterated the government’s position that it would not tolerate any platform that would be used to destabilise the country.

Mohammed said among other conditions for Twitter to resume operation in Nigeria, there must be an agreement as to what contents it could post.

He said Twitter and other platforms must also register as a Nigerian company, obtain license from the National Broadcasting Commission(NBC) and be guided by the rules of the licensing as well as pay taxes.

According to the minister, regulation of social media platforms is becoming a global practice.

He said most countries were just waking up to the fact that the platforms were becoming more powerful than even government and needed to be regulated.

“Singapore, Algeria, Pakistan, Turkey regulate the social media, Australia has done so.

”Even EU that does not have particular laws on social media has made recommendations in a white paper,” he said.

The minister said that the UK initiated a new law which would make social media companies to be fined up to 18 million pounds (about N10.8 billion) if they failed to stamp out online abuses.

He said Google was fined 220 million Euros (about N110 billion) on June 7 by French Competition Regulator for abusing its dominance in the online advertising market in France.

Similarly, the minister said the Federal Cabinet of Pakistan had approved a new set of rules to regulate social media.

In the rules, according to the minister, companies such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and even TikTok were to register and open offices in Pakistan.

He said in compliance with the new online broadcasting rule of Turkey, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video had obtained licences from that country’s broadcasting authority.

Mohammed noted that regulation of the social media was not synonymous with stifling press freedom.

“We must not confuse press freedom with irresponsibility.

“How can you stay in your country and allow your own platform to be used to propagate war in another country?

“The suspension of Twitter is to ensure that no particular platform is used to cause war in Nigeria.

“Secondly, to ensure that whoever is making money in Nigeria must be made to pay tax.

“Our appeal to Nigerians is that they should understand where we are coming from.

“We have no intention to stifle people’s freedom or to cut off the source of livelihood of anybody.

“There must be a country devoid of war before we can talk of freedom and a source of living,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the Federal Government on June 4 suspended indefinitely the operations of the microblogging and social networking service in Nigeria.

Mohammed, who announced the suspension, cited the persistent use of the platform for activities capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

He said the Federal Government had also directed the NBC to immediately commence the process of licensing all Over the Top (OTT) and social media operations in the country.

NAN reports that OTT media service is offered directly to viewers through the internet.
