Kieran Trippier Handed 10-Week Ban For Breaching Betting Rules

England and Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier has been given a 10-week worldwide football ban and fined £70,000 after a Football Association panel found he broke betting rules.

The 30-year-old denied seven alleged breaches, but four were found proven during a personal hearing.

The offences occurred in July 2019, which is when Trippier joined Atletico from Tottenham Hotspur.

His ban from all football is effective immediately.

He will miss 12 games for La Liga leaders Atletico, including their Champions League last-16 first leg tie at home to Chelsea on 23 February.

Atletico Go 3 Points Clear At The Top Of The La Liga Table

Atletico Madrid moved three points clear at the top of La Liga thanks to victory at third-placed Real Sociedad.

Mario Hermoso's header broke the deadlock early in the second half before Marcos Llorente's cool finish sealed victory for Diego Simeone's men.

Atletico, who have conceded just five goals in 13 league games this term, comfortably kept an eighth clean sheet.

Real Madrid could draw level on points if they beat Granada on Wednesday but will have played two games more.

Zinedine Zidane's Real are the only side to have inflicted a domestic defeat on Atletico this season.

Real Madrid Level At Top After Win At Eibar

Real Madrid beat Eibar to record a fourth straight La Liga win and keep pace with leaders Atletico Madrid.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring with his seventh league goal of the season and then set up Luka Modric as Real scored twice in the opening 13 minutes.

Captain Kike Garcia responded for Eibar with a spectacular curled finish from the edge of the box before half-time.

Both sides had chances in a hard-fought second half, but Lucas Vazquez sealed the points for Real in injury time.

Zinedine Zidane's side moved above second-placed Real Sociedad but have played two games more than leaders Atletico, with the city rivals level on points.

Atletico are away to Real Sociedad in a key game at the top on Tuesday, with Los Blancos facing Granada a day later.

Former Argentina coach Sabella dies aged 66

Former Leeds and Sheffield United player and Argentina national manager Alejandro Sabella has died at the age of 66.

Sabella, who guided his country to the final of the 2014 World Cup, had been in hospital since late November.

He made 76 appearances for the Blades between 1978 and 1980 before joining Leeds, for whom he played 23 times.

His death comes just two weeks after the death of another former Argentina player and manager, Diego Maradona.

Sabella joined Sheffield United from River Plate after the club failed to sign Maradona.

He would return to his home country after his subsequent short spell at Elland Road to join Estudiantes, whom he would later manage and lead to the Copa Libertadores in 2009.

His time as coach of the Argentine national side, for whom he also played eight times, began in 2011 and ended after the 2014 tournament, which saw his side beaten by Germany in the final.
