FIFA Awarded $201million Euros After Corruption Probe

World Football governing body, FIFA will receive $201m (£146m) in forfeited funds seized during a corruption probe, the US Department of Justice has announced.

The money, which was seized from the bank accounts of former officials who were prosecuted for corruption, will be used by the Fifa Foundation, an independent foundation, to help finance football-related projects which, Fifa says, can "positively impact so many people across the football world, especially through youth and community programmes".

More than 50 defendants had been criminally charged since the Department of Justice unveiled its corruption probe in 2015.

The 2015 scandal, the biggest in the sport's history, involved collusion between officials from the governing bodies and sports marketing executives, with fraud, bribery, racketeering and money laundering offences committed.

Twenty-seven people and four corporate entities have pleaded guilty, with two people convicted at trial.

It led to the end of Sepp Blatter's 17-year reign as the governing body's president and the election of Gianni Infantino as his successor in February 2016.

Several of the defendants were ordered to forfeit assets obtained through criminal activity.

Under United States law, the Department of Justice has the authority to distribute the proceeds of forfeited assets to victims of crimes, including to the football organisations that were defrauded.

The repayment will begin with an initial $32.3m (£23.5m).

April 27, 2021 Serie A To Punish Breakaway Clubs

Serie A To Punish Breakaway Clubs

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has approved a rule that would ban clubs who sign up to breakaway competitions from competing in Serie A.

It follows the collapse of the proposed European Super League which involved Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan.

The tournament sparked furious backlash but Juve, plus Barcelona and Real Madrid, are yet to abandon the project.

Clubs playing in leagues not recognized by FIFA or UEFA will now not be able to play in domestic tournaments in Italy.

The FIGC added a new clause to its rules underlining that clubs registering for national leagues must agree they will not join private, unauthorized competitions.

Under the European Super League proposals announced on 18 April, clubs agreed to play in the new competition but wanted to continue to play in their domestic leagues.

FIFA Hands Blatter And Valcke New Bans

FIFA has banned ex-president Sepp Blatter from football until 2028 after giving him a new suspension of six years and eight months.

Former FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke has received a similar ban, with both also being fined £780,000.

The punishments were for "various violations" of FIFA's code of ethics.

The new bans start when the current suspensions of 85-year-old Blatter and Valcke, 60, end in October 2021 and October 2025 respectively.

A FIFA statement said: "The investigations into Messrs Blatter and Valcke covered various charges, in particular concerning bonus payments in relation to FIFA competitions that were paid to top FIFA management officials, various amendments and extensions of employment contracts, as well as reimbursement by FIFA of private legal costs in the case of Mr. Valcke."

In its findings, world football's investigatory chamber found Blatter accepted "an undue economic benefit" of 23m Swiss Francs (£18m) "split over the years 2010 to 2014, as a result of the conflict of interest created by the allocation and execution of extraordinary bonus payments between limited top-ranking FIFA officials".

Blatter was originally banned by FIFA for eight years, later reduced to six, over ethics breaches when he was found to have made a £1.3m "disloyal payment" to ex-UEFA boss Michel Platini.

His appeal to the Court of Artration for Sport (Cas was rejected) in December 2016.

Valcke, whose initial ban was reduced from 12 to 10 years, lost an appeal to CAS in July 2018 over his decade-long ban from football.
