Falana Asks FG To Prosecute Emefiele Over Cash Crunch

Renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana is urging the Federal Government to take legal action against the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, as well as the management of the apex bank in connection with the cash shortage experienced in the country earlier this year.

In a formal statement, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria contends that both Emefiele and the CBN provided misleading information to the Nigerian public regarding the availability of cash, attributing it to redesigning the nation's currency.

Falana is additionally advocating for the CBN to undertake the reconstruction of the bank facilities that dissatisfied customers damaged in the aftermath of the cash shortage triggered by the currency redesign policy.

Furthermore, he calls for the apex bank to compensate the families of individuals who lost their lives due to the resulting public unrest.

Femi Falana Raises Concerns Regarding Election Petition

Prominent Human Rights Lawyer Femi Falana recently voiced his concerns about the judiciary's current predicament, which he believes is marred by an unprecedented wave of blackmail and intimidation about the ongoing presidential election petitions.

During a televised program, Falana underscored that, in the entire history of Nigeria, there has been no election petition that has garnered such immense attention and scrutiny since the days of colonial rule. However, he went on to express his view that this heightened level of scrutiny and the accompanying blackmail is entirely unnecessary.

Falana raised a significant concern, emphasising the misconception that everything culminates with the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. He stressed the need to recognise that the judicial process extends beyond this phase.

Despite the overwhelming challenges posed by these circumstances, Falana did not fail to commend the judiciary for its remarkable poise and maturity in the face of blatant attempts at intimidation. The legal community, he believes, continues to demonstrate resilience and dedication in ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has said that the high level of poverty in Africa is responsible for the wave of coups in the continent.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria stated this at a Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) national symposium held in Abuja, under the theme: “Nigerian Economy and the Crisis of Survival, Robbing the Poor to Pay the Rich”.

Falana stressed that despite the poverty in the country, the National Assembly allocated billions to itself.

He subsequently cautioned Nigerian governments against taking the citizens for granted.

His comment comes on the heels of recent coups in Africa. The latest in Gabon where soldiers seized power, ending decades of the Bongo dynasty’s reign.

In his own remarks at the event, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, spoke on the unworkability of government measures to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians.
