Impressive Barcelona Ease Past Napoli

Barcelona put in an impressive performance to beat Napoli and reach the Europa League last 16.

They led by two goals when Jordi Alba finished off a counter-attack from Adama Traore’s ball and Frenkie de Jong curled in a stunning shot.

Lorenzo Insigne gave Napoli hope with a penalty to make it 3-2 on aggregate.

But Gerard Pique scored and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired into the top corner from Traore’s pass, with Matteo Politano netting a late consolation.

Barcelona will discover their last-16 opponents – one of the Europa League group winners – in Friday’s draw.

Both sets of players stood with a banner saying ‘Stop War’ before kick-off in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Celtic Defeat Ferencvaros To Keep Europa League Hopes Alive

Celtic kept their Europa League knockout hopes alive with a deserved win over Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

Kyogo Furuhashi slid home the opener from a sublime Jota pass after a frustrating first half.

Balint Vecsei’s unfortunate own goal confirmed victory after Callum McGregor’s earlier penalty miss had prolonged Celtic’s nerves in Glasgow.

Despite the unusual 15:30 BST kick-off time, partly due to Glasgow’s hosting of the United Nations’ COP26 Climate Conference, a bumper crowd turned out at Celtic Park to help their team on their mission.

The relief at Celtic Park was evident, and there was further elation three minutes later as Adam Montgomery cleverly drew a foul from Henry Wingo to earn a penalty which gave the home side the chance to all but secure a precious win.

But Celtic have rarely looked convincing for 90 minutes this season and Dibusz read McGregor’s spot kick and dived brilliantly to his left to keep the score at 1-0 and set up a nervous ending.

However, Ferencvaros’ promise of a brave, attacking display failed to materialise as Celtic kept their foot on the throttle, eventually being rewarded with 10 minutes left.

The opening defeats by Real Betis and Bayer Leverkusen meant Celtic had to win to have any chance of progressing in this competition, with this being a much-needed convincing victory for Celtic on the European stage, having conceded four goals in losing five of their last six Europa League group games.

Villarreal Beat Man Utd On Penalties To Win Europa League

David de Gea's missed penalty consigned Manchester United to a dramatic 11-10 penalty shootout defeat against Villarreal in the Europa League final following a 1-1 draw in Gdansk, Poland.

In front of 9,500 supporters, Gerard Moreno met Daniel Parejo's free-kick to steer home his 30th goal in all competitions to give the Spanish side a first-half lead.

United, who won the competition under Jose Mourinho in 2017, were indebted once again to the razor-sharp finishing of Edinson Cavani, who struck his 16th goal in his last 11 Europa League starts to haul his side level.

It was one of just two shots on target from United as extra time failed to illuminate a poor contest, but goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli would prove the hero during a pulsating shootout, first converting his own penalty before keeping out De Gea's effort as Unai Emery clinched a fourth Europa League title and Villarreal a first ever major trophy.

Man Utd. Boss Solksjaer Optimistic Ahead Of Europa Final

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says a Manchester United win over Villarreal in the Europa League final could be a "stepping stone for a big future".

Solskjaer, a Champions League winner with United as a player, has yet to win a trophy since taking charge of the club in 2018-19.

"This is a team that we've rebuilt in the last few years. Hopefully this is the start of something more," he said.

United have not won a major trophy for four years, but Solskjaer said he was "quietly confident" of beating Villarreal, who finished seventh in Spain's La Liga in 2020-21.

There are plans for 2,000 fans of each club to be present at the final.

Thirty minutes' extra time will be played if the scores are level after 90 minutes. The final will be decided by a penalty shootout if the scores are still level after 120 minutes.

United face Villarreal in Gdansk, Poland, on Wednesday (20:00 BST).
