Man City Into Ucl Last Four After Win Over Dortmund

Manchester City are through to the semi-finals of the Champions League for only the second time after sealing victory over Borussia Dortmund in the last eight courtesy of comeback win in Germany.

Holding a 2-1 lead from the first leg, City found themselves needing to chase the tie when 17-year-old England international Jude Bellingham curled in a superb shot from the edge of the box.

Stung by the concession, the visitors threw everything they could muster at the German side, with Kevin de Bruyne smashing an effort off the bar before Mahrez saw a shot blocked on the line by the brilliant Bellingham.

The crucial breakthrough for City came early in the second half as Emre Can was penalized for handling in the box and Mahrez stepped up to fire his side ahead again in the tie.

Phil Foden sealed it, adding to the late goal he scored at the Etihad to give his side their first-leg lead with a fierce drive that found the Dortmund goal via the post.

City will face Paris St-Germain in the semi-finals, with the French side having eliminated holders Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

It is the first time City have reached the semis under current boss Pep Guardiola, who twice won the competition during his time as manager of Barcelona.

“We Don’t Have To Sell Players”, Says Dortmund Chief Executive

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke says there will be no cut-price sales by his club this summer.

Currently fifth in the Bundesliga with six games remaining, there is no guarantee that Dortmund will qualify for Europe's top competition next season.

But if rival clubs think that will help them sign Dortmund's star men, Erling Braut Haaland and Jadon Sancho, Watzke says they are wrong.

"When Covid-19 struck, we had no debt. Not one euro. Because of that, it is a comfortable situation. We do not have to sell a player. That is important.

"The rich clubs in the world, they must know when they want a player from Borussia Dortmund there are two possibilities. The first is that I tell them they have no chance. Other times, I will tell them 'this is the price'. Then they must know this is the price. It is not another price.

"We are very clear. We are very honest." Said Watzke.

That is exactly the stance Dortmund took with Sancho last summer. Manchester United were told they could sign Sancho for a fee in excess of 100m euros. United felt that was excessive, but the price did not drop and the England man remained where he was.

This year, similar rumours are circulating around striker Haaland.

Dortmund entertain Manchester City in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday, trailing 2-1 from last week's game at Etihad Stadium.

Man City Secure Late Winner Against Dortmund In UCL Quarter-Final First Leg

Phil Foden's last-ditch strike gave Manchester City a crucial but gracile advantage in their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Borussia Dortmund at Etihad Stadium.

City's hopes of reaching the semi-final looked to be in the balance when Marco Reus gave Dortmund what looked like a priceless away goal with a cool finish from Erling Braut Haaland's pass six minutes from time.

Kevin de Bruyne, who had given City the lead with a crisp finish after 19 minutes, played his part once more in the final minute of normal time when his fine cross was touched back by Ilkay Gundogan for Foden to stroke a finish past Marwin Hitz.

It was a bitter blow for an enterprising Dortmund side, who will leave Manchester nursing a burning sense of injustice directed towards Romanian official Ovidiu Hategan after he controversially ruled out Jude Bellingham's second-half goal with City leading 1-0.

Bellingham beat Ederson to a throughball but after it appeared City's keeper kicked the teenager, the referee blew for a foul against Borussia with the England star racing towards an empty net - not even allowing the intervention of VAR which would have surely awarded a goal.

City, who had a first-half penalty award overturned by VAR, showed commendable strength of character and great determination to react to the blow of Reus' goal to score the winner and are now in pole position before the return leg in Germany.

Jadon Sancho: Borussia Dortmund’s England winger agrees new £190k-a-week contract

Borussia Dortmund’s England winger Jadon Sancho has agreed a new contract with the Bundesliga club worth about £190,000 a week, including bonuses.

The 19-year-old, who was the subject of summer interest from Manchester United, scored 13 goals last season as Dortmund finished second behind Bayern Munich.

Sancho also scored in their opening league game this term – Saturday’s 5-1 win over Augsburg.

Signed from Manchester City in 2017, his previous deal ran until 2022.

Sancho, who was part of Watford’s academy before joining City, made his England debut against Croatia in October 2018 and has six caps.
