Seventeen military personnel—a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and 13 soldiers—were killed while on a “peacekeeping mission” in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state last Thursday, in a major blow to the country’s military.

As authorities in the country intensify work on the matter, Governor Oborevwori wants traditional rulers to cooperate in the investigations.

While addressing traditional rulers on the unfortunate incident at the State Traditional Rulers’ Council Secretariat in Asaba, Oborevwori said Delta is governed within the tenets of the rule of law and human decency, stressing that no kingdom should shield the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

The governor said President Tinubu and the military authorities have assured him that innocent citizens in the state would not be victimized.

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has asserted that the perpetrators behind the tragic killing of 16 officers and men of the 181 Amphibious Battalion in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, are neither from the Niger Delta nor Nigeria.

Addressing the Senate during a debate on Tuesday, he suggested that the youths responsible for the soldiers' deaths might be mercenaries rather than locals. Senator Akpabio emphasized that, despite the severity of the incident, Nigeria is not at war.

In response to the appalling attack, the Senate has initiated an investigation and tasked its Committee on Defense, Army, Navy, and Air Force to collaborate with military authorities to uncover the underlying causes of the heinous act.

Furthermore, the Senate called upon the federal government to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice for the slain military personnel. A moment of silence was observed in honor of the fallen soldiers.

Moreover, the Senate advocated for the reinforcement of law enforcement agencies to prevent the military from being entangled in civilian affairs. However, a proposal to extend condolences to the families of innocent civilians killed during the incident was not accepted due to uncertainty regarding the exact number of casualties.

While rejecting the suggestion for relief materials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for the affected community, the Senate agreed to compensate the families of the deceased soldiers promptly. This resolution was put forth by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin and seconded by Senator Tony Nwoye.

A member of the House of Representatives representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South, and Udu Federal Constituency, Francis Waive, has called for a thorough investigation of the killings of soldiers and alleged reprisals in the Okuama community of Delta State.

While condemning the attack, Waive said the lives of the people are also precious.

The Federal Lawmaker, who is also the Chairman of the of the House Committee on Rules and Business, said the investigation is necessary to reveal if fifth columnists were involved in the saga.

Waive made this known in a statement he signed, saying there is a need for the security agents to comb the areas where the corpses of the gallant soldiers were found, and make sure their killers were found and brought to book.

He also called for the speedy intervention of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to shelter and give succor to the residents who have been displaced by the crisis.
