Federal Governement Set To Transfer 613 Repentant Terrorists To Their States

According to Gen. Lucky Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff, 613 rehabilitated low-risk repentant terrorists would be returned to respective state governments for reintegration into society.

Irabor made the announcement on Thursday at the fifth Stakeholders’ Meeting of Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC) in Abuja.

The CDS, represented by Maj.-Gen. Adeyemi Yekini, Chief of Defence Training and Operations, said that the 613 clients are now undergoing deradicalization and rehabilitation at the OPSC.

He said that the gathering will thoroughly review the Deradicalization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DRR) Programme before the rehabilitated clients were sent to their respective state governments.

According to Irabor, President Muhammadu Buhari formed the OPSC in September 2015 as a channel for willing and repentant terrorists to lay down their guns and participate in a systematic DRR program.

Court Stops DSS From Arresting Emefiele

A federal high court sitting in Abuja has declined an application by the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest and detain the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

In declining the motion ex parte — filed by an applicant in the absence of the respondent — the chief judge, Justice John Tsoho, said the secret police did not provide any concrete evidence to substantiate its claims that Emefiele was involved in terrorism financing and economic crimes.

The court said such an application should have been accompanied with the presidential approval because of the grave implications for the Nigerian economy if the CBN governor is arrested and detained.

There are suggestions that the bid to arrest Emefiele might be political given the impact the redesign of the naira and limit on cash withdrawals might have on vote-buying in the 2023 elections.

Earlier on Monday, a group of civil society organizations had raised the alarm that there was a plot to frame Emefiele for terrorism and remove him from office.

Meanwhile, DSS has warned Nigerians against being used to undermine its investigations.

In a statement, DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, said the service will not be distracted by those seeking to use “propaganda” to undermine its lawful investigations.

CBN To Redesign 200, 300 & 1000 Naira Notes, To Begin Circulation Dec 15

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced a redesign of the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes.

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, disclosed this during a special press briefing in Abuja, noting that the new design will come into effect from December 15, 2022.

Emefiele said that the action was taken in order to take control of the currency in circulation, advising Nigerians to take old notes to banks for the new notes.

Reacting to this development, the Chief Executive Officer, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, Dr Muda Yusuf said that is the least of the problems of Nigeria’ economy right now.

Federal Government Loses Application To Transfer Suit Against Proscribed Ipob Leader, Nnamdi Kanu To Abuja

The Federal Government has lost its bid to transfer the suit of the extraordinary rendition of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Ipob Nnamdi Kanu, from Umuahia to Abuja.

The Federal High Court in Umuahia, Abia State, insisted that it has the jurisdiction to hear and determine the suit.

This was disclosed by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, in a tweet noting that the matter was still ongoing.

The Special Counsel was challenging Kanu’s abduction and extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

He is, among other things, praying the court to order his return to Kenya, where he was abducted or UK, his country of abode.
