May 6, 2024 Mother Accuses Cover-Up in Protest-Related Death of Four-Year-Old in Abuja School

The mother of the late four-year-old Miguel Ovoke, who tragically passed away at BrickHall School in Abuja's Cadastral Zone B11, Kaura, took to the school premises on Monday accompanied by others to voice their grievances over her son's death. Allegations of a cover-up by the school authorities regarding the circumstances leading to Miguel's demise prompted the protest.

Videos circulating on social media depict the grieving mother clad in black, holding a placard demanding justice for Miguel with the inscription, ‘We Need Justice For Miguel, BrickHall School Kill Miguel.’ Expressing her dismay, she pointed out the overcrowded classroom conditions, stating, “18 students for one class where I dey pay N350,000.”

In another video, she confronts school staff, accusing them of concealing her son's death. From the head teacher to other staff members, she singles out individuals whom she claims misled medical professionals about Miguel's condition. She asserts, “Doctor say my pikin no die for hospital. Na who carry my pikin dead body go hospital.”

A police officer featured in one of the videos questions her presence, citing ongoing investigations, “If your matter is in CID, why are you here?”

It was previously reported that Miguel passed away on the school premises during feeding hours. According to a death certificate issued by Excel Specialist Hospital, Abuja, dated April 24, 2024, Miguel was brought to the hospital by his teachers in an unconscious state due to aspiration on meat while feeding at school. Despite efforts by medical personnel to resuscitate him, he was declared "Brought in Dead."
