May 6, 2024 LASG Commences Removal Of Over 100 Shanties Under Adeniji-Adele Bridge Today

The Lagos State Government has declared its intention to dismantle over 100 shanties at the Adeniji Adele Underbridge starting today. In a Sunday interview, State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement.

Wahab explained that this action follows the expiry of a 48-hour notice given to the inhabitants of the shanties, instructing them to evacuate their possessions. He noted that the operation would be supported by the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI/LAGESC) and the Ministry’s Monitoring Enforcement and Compliance (MEC) departments, with additional security backup.

He emphasized that this cleanup is part of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu's broader initiative to clear all ungoverned spaces across Lagos. Wahab highlighted the unsightly nature of the shanties, situated in the central area of Lagos Island, as being contrary to the image of a modern, smart city.

Wahab also pointed out the public health and safety risks posed by these shanties, including unsanitary living conditions and their use as hideouts for criminals and drug trafficking. He urged the shanty residents to vacate voluntarily with their belongings before enforcement actions begin on Monday.

This initiative follows similar operations in areas such as Ijora, Apongbon, Obalende, and Dolphin, aimed at reclaiming and cleaning up the city’s spaces.
