Monaco Sign Balogun For £35m From Arsenal

Monaco have completed the £35m signing of striker Folarin Balogun from Arsenal on a five-year deal.

The 22-year-old United States forward returns to France after scoring 22 goals on loan at Reims last season.

Balogun had not featured for Arsenal in the Premier League at the start of this season despite first-choice striker Gabriel Jesus being injured.

He signed professional terms with Arsenal at 17 and made two top-flight appearances with the club.

In Jesus' absence, Eddie Nketiah started the first two matches of the campaign, while Leandro Trossard was favoured in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Fulham.

In a statement on their website, Arsenal said: "We thank Folarin for his contribution to Arsenal, through our academy into the first team, and wish him the best of health and happiness in his new chapter at Monaco."

Born in New York, Balogun moved to London as a child and came through Arsenal's academy system.

He played for England age group sides through to under-21s, earning 13 caps at that level, before electing to play for the United States at senior level.

Balogun had loan spells at Middlesbrough and Reims and was linked with Chelsea before Arsenal accepted Monaco's offer.

Brighton Set To Sign Spain Forward On Season-Long Loan

Spain forward Ansu Fati is set to complete a surprise season-long loan move to Brighton from Barcelona.

Fati has fallen the pecking order at Barcelona, who need to create space in their squad to sign Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo on loan.

Brighton's deal for the 20-year-old does not include an obligation to buy.

Tottenham had also been linked with Fati, but he is understood to have been impressed by Brighton's style of play under manager Roberto de Zerbi.

If the deal goes as planned, it would be a major coup for Brighton, who will be playing European football this season for the first time, having qualified for the Europa League.

Fati, who was born in Guinea-Bissau but chose to represent Spain and was part of their World Cup squad last year, is widely viewed as one of the most promising young players in the game.

In 2021, he signed a new contract with Barcelona to run until 2027, including a 1bn euro buyout clause.

Brighton Sign Teenage Midfielder From Lille For 27m Euros (£23.2m)

Brighton have signed Cameroon-born midfielder Carlos Baleba on a five-year deal for 27m euros (£23.2m) from French side Lille.

The 19-year-old only made his Lille debut 12 months ago but has forged an impressive reputation.

Baleba will fill the hole left by Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo, who joined Chelsea from Brighton for a British record £115m.

Seagulls boss Roberto de Zerbi said: "He will be the club's future."

Baleba made 19 league appearances for Lille last season.

He played two games in this campaign before being left on the bench for Lille's 4-1 defeat by Lorient on Sunday.

De Zerbi added: "Carlos is a very good player. He's very young but a specific player for our style."

Baleba moved to Lille in January 2022 before making his first Ligue 1 start 12 months later.

He follows Bart Verbruggen, Joao Pedro, Mahmoud Dahoud, James Milner and Igor Julio in joining the Seagulls this summer.

Forward Pedro joined Brighton from Watford for just under £30m, goalkeeper Verbruggen signed from Anderlecht for £16.3m, and defender Igor moved from Fiorentina for £14.5m. Midfielders Milner and Dahoud were free transfers from Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.

USA Forward Rapinoe To Play Final Game Against South Africa On September 24

Megan Rapinoe will play her final match for the United States in a friendly against South Africa on 24 September.

Rapinoe has played in four World Cups, winning the 2015 and 2019 editions.

Before the 2023 World Cup, she confirmed plans to retire when the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) season ends in November.

"When I think back on the past 30-plus years of playing this game, my overriding emotions are joy and gratitude," Rapinoe said.

"It's been an unbelievable ride. It will be special to have this one last opportunity to play for my country and get the chance to thank my teammates and everyone who has had an impact on me as a person and player over the years."

The 2019 Ballon d'Or winner has made 203 appearances for the USA, scoring 63 goals, and also helped her country win gold at the 2012 Olympics in London.

The 38-year-old was one of three American players to miss a penalty when they were knocked out of the 2023 World Cup by Sweden in the last 16, which was thought to have been her final international appearance.

But the USA will now play South Africa in two friendlies on 21 September and 24 September, the second of which will occur at Soldier Field in Chicago and is being billed as Rapinoe's "farewell game".

The forward is scheduled to sign off her professional career on 15 October when NWSL side OL Reign play their final game of the season at Chicago Red Stars.
