He and former Flying Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu have earned spots in the Europa League team of the week following their standout performances in the first round of matches.

Boniface's brilliant display included a goal and an assist against Swedish side BK Hacken, contributing significantly to Bayer Leverkusen's 4-0 victory. Meanwhile, Ogbu's perfect header helped Slavia Prague secure a 2-0 win over Servette.

The Nigerian duo were recognized in the Europa League team of the week, alongside other notable players like Joao Pedro, James Ward-Prowse, Sebastian Coates, and Granit Xhaka. Ten Hag: Man Utd Determined To Reverse Season’s Fortunes

Erik ten Hag addressed Manchester United's difficult start to the season, emphasising the collective effort to turn things around.

The team has faced a rocky beginning, losing four of their first six matches across all competitions. As they prepare to face Burnley, currently in 13th place in the Premier League, Ten Hag acknowledged the challenges, stating, "It’s my second year... you will have your gaps, and you get stronger from it as long as you stay together, and that’s what we’re doing."

While reports of unrest in the dressing room have surfaced and player attitudes have been scrutinized, Ten Hag remained positive, saying, "I know my players. Everyone can make suggestions; we are OK with it."

The upcoming battle against Burnley carries significant pressure for United, who will again be without Jadon Sancho due to an ongoing disagreement with the manager.

Ten Hag stated, "It depends on him," regarding Sancho's future with the club while reaffirming the team's focus on the Burnley fixture.

Germany Names Nagelsmann As New Coach

Following the dismissal of Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann steps in as the new national team coach, tasked with revitalising Germany's performance before they host Euro 2024.

The German Football Association is eager to avoid another disappointing tournament, especially on home turf.

Nagelsmann, the former Bayern Munich manager, has signed a contract until the end of July 2024, providing flexibility after Euro 2024. Expressing his eagerness, Nagelsmann emphasised the special significance of hosting a European Championship.

Hansi Flick, the first coach in Germany's history to be dismissed, faced challenges, with only four wins in 17 matches leading up to his removal. The team's underwhelming performance led to an early exit from the 2022 World Cup.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf praised Nagelsmann as an exceptional coach, expressing confidence in his ability to inspire fans and achieve success in the Euros.

Flick's termination followed a humiliating 4-1 loss to Japan in a friendly match in Wolfsburg in early September. Nagelsmann, who succeeded Flick at Bayern, has been without a coaching position since his departure from the German champions in March.

Adekuoroye Qualifies For 2024 Olympics

Nigerian female freestyle wrestler Odunayo Adekuoroye has become the country’s first grappler to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Paris after winning the bronze medal in women’s 57kg at the ongoing World Championships in Belgrade on Wednesday.

Adekuoroye won her third-place fight against Elvira Kamaloglu, defeating her Turkish opponent 9-5 to secure a spot for Paris.

Paris 2024 will be Adekuoroye’s third Olympics, and she will be gunning for the elusive medal after disappointments in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

The 29-year-old, who missed the African Wrestling Championship earlier this year, was charged for her first world title but lost 6-4 to world No.1 and India’s Sarita Mor in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

She, however, was able to compete in the repechage on Wednesday, which propelled her to winning her third World Championships bronze medal and a spot at next year’s Olympics.

Meanwhile, 11-time African champion and silver medallist at Tokyo 2020, Blessing Oborududu, narrowly lost to Vusala Parfianovich in the women’s 68kg quarter-finals, just as Esther Kolawole also lost 7-1 to world No. 8 Grace Bullen of Norway in the quarter-finals of the women’s 62kg event.

Oborududu and Kolawole will have a chance to punch their Olympic tickets on Thursday (today) in the repechage if their conquerors progress to the final of their respective events.
