Arsenal Begin Europa League Campaign With Victory

Arsenal got their Europa League campaign off to a positive start with a 2-1 win over FC Zurich on Wednesday evening, with the players mourning the passing of The Queen with a minute's silence before the start of the second period.

The Gunners started slowly but gradually came into the game and took the lead at the end of a sweeping counter-attack in the 16th minute.

Fabio Vieira played the ball into space as the pace of Eddie Nketiah saw him break in behind and cross for Marquinhos to turn home an emphatic finish on his club debut.

Vieira and Granit Xhaka came close to adding a second as Arsenal began to dominate, only to concede a clumsy penalty three minutes before the break.

Nketiah was adjudged to have fouled Fidan Aliti inside the box and Mirlind Kryeziu made no mistake from the spot, sending Matt Turner the wrong way to level.

Both sets of players emerged for the second half and gathered around the centre circle to observe a minute's silence to mark the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth II, which was announced during half-time.

Nketiah, atoning for his earlier error, scored the deciding goal in the 62nd minute when heading home Marquinhos' cross at the back post.

The winner prompted a muted response from players on the pitch as well as manager Mikel Arteta, wearing a black armband, on the sidelines in light of the sad news from Buckingham Palace.

Richarlison’s Late Double Sees Off 10-Man Marseille

Richarlison scored two late headed goals to edge Tottenham past 10-man Marseille as Champions League football returned in north London.

It had been over two years since a ball in this competition had been kicked at their magnificent stadium and although it took them 76 minutes to find their stride, it was the Brazilian that hauled spurs to victory.

Marseille had looked comfortable up until Chancel Mbemba was sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity just after half-time for wiping out Heung-Min Son.

Even then, Spurs lacked any real conviction in their attacking play and Richarlison's opener - a header from 10 yards out - was Antonio Conte's side's first effort on target.

Spurs then went and scored with their second effort on target when Richarlison showed superb finishing skills to divert a Pierre-Emile Højbjerg cross home with another header.

The overwhelming nature of his achievement on what was his Champions League debut became too much for him at full-time when he was embraced by his family. Spurs' new number nine was left in tears, realising the stage he had just performed on.

Outstanding Napoli Score Four To Embarrass Liverpool In Champions League Opener

Liverpool's Champions League campaign got off to a nightmare start in hot and humid Naples on Wednesday as sensational Napoli ran out comprehensive 4-1 winners.

Victor Osimhen set the precedent early on, hitting the post inside the opening 60 seconds before James Milner clumsily conceded a fifth-minute penalty, which Piotr Zielinski kept his cool to convert.

Liverpool, stunned into submission, then presented Osimhen with his own chance to test Alisson from 12 yards after an ill-timed challenge from Virgil van Dijk was penalised by VAR review.

Alisson denied the Napoli striker's spot-kick attempt, but Liverpool's reprieve only lasted 13 minutes. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia outmuscled Joe Gomez, who endured a torrid 45 minutes before being hauled off, to present Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa with an opportunity to slot the ball low past Liverpool's helpless 'keeper.

Things went from bad to worse shortly before the interval as substitute Giovanni Simeone - on in place of the injured Osimhen - was found unmarked in the six yard box to turn home Kvaratskhelia's pinpoint cross.

Zielinski rounded off the scoring for Luciano Spalletti's new-look side two minutes into the second period to compound Liverpool's misery, before Luis Diaz temporarily quietened the deafening home crowd when cutting inside to bend a low right-footed shot beyond Alex Meret.

Diaz, Liverpool's only saviour on an otherwise sultry evening, also saw a thumping header saved while concerns in midfield personnel were slightly assuaged by the reemergence of Thiago and debut of Juventus loanee Arthur - both second-half substitutes.

Lewandowski Hits Barca Hat-Trick Before Bayern Return

Robert Lewandowski warmed up for next week's meeting with former club Bayern Munich by scoring a magnificent hat-trick in Barcelona's crushing Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen.

The 34-year-old Poland forward demonstrated his value by making it eight goals in five games since leaving Bayern in July.

Lewandowski, who helped Bayern win the competition in 2019-20, marked his first Champions League appearance for Barca with a clinical finish which doubled the lead after Franck Kessie had headed the hosts ahead.

He then made it 3-1 on the stroke of half-time with a header after Ousmane Dembele did well to win back possession before producing a fine cross.

Viktoria Plzen had briefly given their travelling fans from the Czech Republic something to cheer when Jan Sykora headed past Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but Barca - and Lewandowski - proved far too strong.

Lewandowski completed his hat-trick after 67 minutes following an assist by former Manchester City forward Ferran Torres, who added the fifth.

Lewandowski is the first player to score a Champions League hat-trick for three different teams - Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

He has now scored 32 goals in his last 20 Champions League group stage matches.

This result was the perfect start to Group C for Barcelona, who face Bayern - 2-0 winners at Inter Milan - next Tuesday.
