Police Clarify The Use Of Tear Gas To Disperse Mohbad’s Supporters

In a recent statement, the Lagos State Police Command defended their decision to employ teargas to disband supporters of the late singer Mohbad, who gathered at the Lekki tollgate for a candlelight procession.

According to the police, the approved venue for the event was Muri Okunola Park on Victoria Island, with the understanding that the procession would conclude by 8 p.m.

However, after the event concluded at the agreed-upon location and time, a group with ulterior motives gathered at the Lekki tollgate, causing traffic disruptions. Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, emphasised that teargas were used as a last resort. He stated that the police and the event organisers pleaded with the group to clear the road, but their requests were not heeded.

Hundeyin confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries due to the dispersal. He clarified, “Not a single live ammunition was fired,” and stressed that the police followed crowd management best practices throughout the encounter.

The statement further explained that the decision to use teargas was based on prior experiences and a thorough assessment of the situation. The police were determined to uphold public safety, prevent disorder, and maintain traffic flow on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

Hundeyin called for calm and assured the public that the investigation into Mohbad's death was progressing smoothly.

He urged everyone to avoid unnecessary disruptions and allow the police to conduct a thorough and timely investigation.

Enugu Governorship Tribunal Upholds Mbah’s Victory, Dismisses Edeoga’s Petition

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Enugu State has affirmed the victory of Governor Peter Mbah from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing the challenge brought forth by Barr Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party (LP). Edeoga's primary claims revolved around allegations of Mbah's NYSC certificate forgery, election irregularities, and over-voting.

The three-person panel, led by Justice Kudirat Morayo Akano, ruled in favour of Mbah, rejecting Edeoga's bid to disqualify him based on the alleged NYSC certificate forgery. The panel clarified that, according to Section 177 of the 1999 Constitution, an NYSC certificate is not a mandatory requirement for gubernatorial candidates.

The Tribunal emphasised that Mbah had already met the qualifications for office without the NYSC certificate, as he did not submit it to INEC. The allegations of over-voting and BVAS bypassing were also dismissed.

Furthermore, the panel determined that the witnesses presented by the Labour Party were not accredited agents recognised by INEC, rendering their testimony invalid. It concluded that Mbah was duly elected governor based on the majority of lawful and valid votes cast during the election.

Earlier in the day, the Tribunal dismissed a petition from the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) gubernatorial candidate, Elder Christopher Agu.
