September 22, 2023 TUC Declares 1-Day Protest In Lagos

In a significant move, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has scheduled a one-day protest in Lagos State, South-West Nigeria, set to take place on Monday, September 25.

This demonstration is in response to what the TUC perceives as the Lagos State Government's stringent measures against the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), an affiliate of the TUC.

During a press briefing in Abuja, TUC President Festus Osifo emphasised the necessity of this protest, citing the failure of the Lagos State Government to adhere to a court ruling on the matter. Osifo pointed out that strikes are typically considered a last resort for trade unions, expressing hope that the state government will take definitive steps to avert industrial action that could potentially have repercussions within and across the nation.

Various affiliate members of the TUC are already in the process of mobilising their constituents. These include the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI), and the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies.

Stay tuned for further updates on this crucial event, a testament to the TUC's dedication to upholding workers' rights and interests.
