IGP Launches FCT Special Squad To Curb Abductions

On Wednesday, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, initiated a specialized team named the 'Special Intervention Squad' to combat the increasing incidents of kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

During the squad's launch in Abuja, the police chief highlighted that the team consists of specially trained mobile police officers dedicated to responding swiftly to security breaches in the FCT.

Emphasizing the squad's commitment to extensive community policing, Egbetokun assured the public that the newly established Special Intervention Squad would be replicated in neighbouring states to address the ongoing security challenges effectively. The move comes in response to public outcry following the abduction of six siblings and their father in the Bwari Area Council of Abuja on January 3, 2024. Tragically, one of the sisters, identified as Nabeehah, was reportedly killed by the kidnappers when their parents could not meet the N60 million ransom deadline.

In a bid to tackle the menace of kidnapping and other criminal activities in the nation's capital, the IGP called for intensified efforts on Monday. He held meetings with the Force Management Team and Tactical Squads in Abuja as part of the strategic response.

President Bola Tinubu expressed concern over the recent surge in kidnappings and bandit attacks in the FCT and other parts of the country on Tuesday. Describing the situation as disturbing, ungodly, and sinister, the President assured the public that security agencies would promptly address the current challenge. Furthermore, he pledged that comprehensive resources, policies, and plans would be implemented soon to facilitate the extensive education of Nigerian youths.

Reps Fume As Service Chiefs, IGP Shun Debate

The House of Representatives has expressed displeasure over the absence of the Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who instead sent representatives, at an interactive session scheduled to hold during plenary.

The service chiefs are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, and Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.

The House had last week scheduled a sectoral debate with the Security Chiefs as it plans to do with other sectors of the country.

Following a constitutional point of order by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, the House rejected the representation of the security heads and instead postponed the session.

Osun State Police Encourage Voluntary Surrender Of Illegal Firearms

In Osun State, the police force has issued a compelling call to individuals who possess illegal firearms, urging them to surrender their weapons at the nearest Divisional Police Headquarters voluntarily.

This initiative is part of a nationwide endeavour to address the proliferation of firearms in the country.

This directive, aligning with the order of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, aims to curb the widespread circulation of illicit arms and enhance public safety. SP Yemisi Opalola, the spokesperson for the Osun Police Command, made the announcement.

Opalola underscored that no punitive measures will be taken against those who voluntarily submit their firearms, assuring them that no arrests or detentions will occur due to compliance with this directive.

This move follows IGP Egbetokun's earlier statement on August 8, 2023, where he temporarily suspended the issuance of small arms licenses across Nigeria. The goal is to initiate a thorough clean-up of firearms currently in circulation.

"We are conducting a thorough clean-up of arms in circulation. There are far too many arms in circulation, and if we continue to issue licenses for arms, we may exacerbate the problems we are trying to solve," remarked IGP Egbetokun.

The existing Firearm Act has played a crucial role in regulating firearms in Nigeria for several years, stipulating that possessing firearms or ammunition without a valid license from the President or the Inspector General of Police is illegal.

In addition to the call for surrendering illegal firearms, IGP Egbetokun has also announced the establishment of an ad hoc committee tasked with a comprehensive review of firearms licensing and regulations by the Nigeria Police Force. The committee's mandate includes thoroughly assessing current firearms licensing procedures and regulations to make them more effective, transparent, and accountable.
