October 30, 2023 Youths Protest In Lagos Demand Living Wage And Others

In Lagos, a group of young demonstrators has assembled to voice their disapproval of lawmakers at the National Assembly purchasing Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs).

This gathering, which took place in the Ikeja district of Lagos on Monday, saw the protesters carrying placards bearing slogans like "Fund education, not SUVs," "Pay a living wage, not SUVs," and "Fund hospitals, not SUVs," among others.

The protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with the use of public funds by lawmakers to acquire SUVs, deeming it insensitive in light of the suffering experienced by the majority of the population.

Juwon Sanyaolu, one of the demonstrators, pointed out that workers still strive for a sustainable living wage, with the current N33,000 minimum wage falling short. Meanwhile, lawmakers in the National Assembly are taking delivery of expensive vehicles worth approximately N160 billion.

Sanyaolu questioned the necessity of lawmakers receiving hardship allowances when facing minimal hardships. This criticism comes as reports indicate that members of the Green Chamber have begun receiving their SUVs, while legislators in the Red Chamber are expected to receive their first batch of vehicles this week.
