January 16, 2024 Wike Summons Emergency Meeting As Insecurity Worsens In FCT

In response to the escalating insecurity plaguing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has called for an urgent security meeting.

Wike made this announcement during an event where he reassured FCT residents of their safety, emphasising the government's commitment to providing necessary support to security forces to address the prevailing insecurity.

The emergency meeting convened various stakeholders, including heads of security agencies in the FCT, key Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) officials, council chairpersons, and traditional rulers. Wike underscored the vital role of area council chairpersons in addressing local-level responsibilities and urged them to remain vigilant.

Recent weeks have witnessed a surge in bandit activities in certain areas of the FCT, leading to the abduction of residents from their homes. Tensions escalated when incidents resulted in fatalities, including the tragic death of a 13-year-old secondary school student due to failure to meet a ransom payment deadline.

Wike's initiative to convene the emergency meeting reflects the gravity of the security situation and the need for a coordinated effort to restore peace and safeguard the well-being of FCT residents. The government's commitment to providing necessary resources and support to security agents underscores a determined approach to tackling the challenges.
