August 29, 2023 Wike Announces Revival Of Monthly Sanitation For A Cleaner Abuja City In FCT

Wike, addressing reporters in Abuja on Monday after a private meeting with contractors overseeing various projects in the FCT, shared his plans. He had already informed President Bola Tinubu about the proposal to designate two Saturdays monthly for sanitation, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The rationale behind this initiative is to facilitate companies aiding the FCT with logistical support in effectively clearing waste from markets and public spaces. Wike emphasised that the responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness of Abuja lies with everyone.

He communicated, "Collective sacrifices are necessary. This isn't about enduring hardship; everyone contributes to waste generation. You're making a meaningful difference by dedicating just three hours on a Saturday to tidy up and prepare refuse for disposal. We appeal to residents to collaborate to achieve our cleanliness objectives."

Highlighting positive strides in enhancing street lighting, the minister acknowledged, "We haven't reached our ultimate goal, but rest assured, illumination will encompass all of Abuja."

Turning attention to the issue of deviations from the Abuja Master Plan, Wike assured that rectification measures were imminent. He indicated that the Federal Capital Territory Administration was delineating zones intended for parks and green spaces, distinguishing them from areas that had been infringed upon.

Addressing longstanding cases of undeveloped plots, Wike expressed, "It's perplexing to see vacant city land occupied by makeshift structures due to neglect. Properties unfinished for two decades have become havens for criminals. As a committed government, we won't permit this. We aim to establish a secure environment in Abuja, but we can't do it alone; the cooperation of every stakeholder is essential."

Satellite towns were addressed in Wike's discourse. He mentioned plans to prioritise these areas, starting with site visits to ascertain requirements and formulate strategies for enhancing their infrastructure and amenities.

Wike acknowledged the constraints of limited funding, emphasising that intervening in all satellite towns concurrently wasn't feasible due to budget limitations. "While contracts were awarded for many satellite towns, financial backing remains absent," Wike remarked candidly.

He pointed out that the 2022 national budget allocated ₦‎15 billion for projects worth over a trillion naira, underscoring the necessity for a reasonable allocation of resources within the ministry's purview.
