October 20, 2021 Vehicular Procession Will Be Allowed To Mark Endsars Memorial In Lagos

Youths across the country are set to mark the first anniversary of the ENDSARS protest.

In October 2020, Nigerian youths took to the streets in some parts of the country to protest against the now-disbanded special anti-robbery squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigeria Police Force.

And on this day last year, they gathered at the Lekki Toll Plaza where a service was held to honor victims of police brutality but the event soon went awry when gunshots rented the air and people were allegedly killed.

Ahead of the planned commemoration, the Lagos State Police Command said it will only allow indoor and virtual events.

A move that has been condemned by several groups and human rights organizations that have said it is the fundamental right of citizens to protest.

However, the activists behind the planned protests have stated that they will be having a car procession in honor of those believed to have lost their lives during the EndSARS protests.

The car procession will drive through the Lekki tollgate in Lagos which was the epicenter of the protests last year.

Briefing reporters in Ikeja, the State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said the police would not allow any form of protest except vehicular procession.

The police commissioner cautioned residents, especially the youth against embarking on any form of protest without the approval of the police.

Odumosu explained that such approval will enable police deployment for adequate protection against hoodlums who could hijack the exercise.
