September 22, 2023 Tribunal Verdict Sparks Tension In Jos Plateau Gubernatorial Case

Today, the Governorship Elections Petitions Tribunal in Plateau State is scheduled to announce its decision regarding the petition brought forth by the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and its gubernatorial candidate from the March 18, 2023, elections.

Nentawe Yiltwatda of the APC contested the victory of Governor Caleb Mutfwang from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the aforementioned polls.

Governor Mutfwang emerged victorious with 525,299 votes, surpassing Yiltwatda, who garnered 481,370 votes, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Notably, the tribunal recently dismissed a petition from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) gubernatorial candidate, Alfred Dabwan against Governor Mutfwang. This petition sought to nullify the poll based on the alleged exclusion of the party’s logo from the ballot paper.

The ruling, set for September 22, 2023, has heightened tension in Jos and its surroundings. Security measures have been reinforced around the State High Court complex, where the tribunal is located, ensuring a secure process during this pivotal moment in Plateau State’s political scene. Nearby recreational centres have been directed to remain closed for the day.
