January 30, 2024 Thai Police Warn Liverpool Fans Not To Fall For Alonso Scam

Liverpool fans are being cautioned by Thai police to remain vigilant against online scammers posing as Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, who is rumored to be a top contender to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield in the upcoming summer.

The Central Investigation Bureau has issued a warning to supporters regarding a circulating viral message claiming to be from the Spanish coach's Instagram account. The fraudulent message requests donations of 300 baht ($8.50) purportedly to assist with Alonso's airfare expenses.

In Thai, the message reads, “I am Xabi Alonso. I will be in charge of Liverpool next season, but I am short of money for my flights to Liverpool.” This message has raised concerns among fans who may unknowingly fall victim to the scam.

Following Klopp's surprising announcement that he would be stepping down at the end of the season, Alonso has emerged as one of the favorites to take over. However, Thai authorities have emphasized that the circulating message is a scam and that fans should exercise caution.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, the police clarified, "Liverpool fans, calm down. Xabi is not yet the manager, but there is already a scammer." They revealed that the manipulated message, designed to appear as if it originated from Alonso's official Instagram account, is the work of an imposter posing as the former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder.

Thailand has a significant following for the Premier League, and Liverpool enjoys immense support. The warning serves as a reminder for fans to be wary of potential scams, especially during this period of managerial transition as the club prepares for a new era.
