Zamfara Shuts Schools, Imposes Curfew After Another Mass Abduction Of Students

Zamfara State government has shut down schools across the state following Wednesday’s abduction of 73 students from a public school in the state.

The state government also imposed a 6 pm to 6 am. curfew on 13 local government areas and 8 p.m. to 6 am. in Gusau, the state capital.

The police commissioner in the state, Ayuba Elkana, made the disclosure while briefing journalists after a security meeting chaired by Governor Bello Matawalle.

He said he has deployed a search and rescue team to work with the military to rescue the abducted students.

The security meeting was convened after students of Government Day Secondary School kaya in Maradun were kidnapped Wednesday afternoon.

A source in Maradun confirmed that the Vice Principal of the school, Zayyanu Tsaba, was among those kidnapped.

Governor Mattawalle has ordered for special prayers to end banditry.

Zamfara Senator Dumps PDP, Expected To Join APC With Governor Matawalle

Gusau says his resignation is due to the collapse of internal democracy in the PDP.

The lawmaker's resignation was announced in a letter read by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, during plenary on Tuesday, June 29, 2021.

Gusau said his resignation was due to the collapse of internal democracy and functionalisation of the PDP from ward levels in Zamfara.

"Further decision of my party affiliation will be communicated to this chamber in due course," the 60-year-old said.

Tuesday's announcement is believed to be part of a plot by Zamfara governor, Bello Matawalle, to dump the PDP for the APC.

His defection has already been confirmed by the APC-controlled Presidency,  and it's only a matter of time before he's officially welcomed by the leadership of the party.

His government has also announced that he will defect alongside Zamfara lawmakers in the House of Assembly, and federal representatives in the National Assembly.

The PDP on Monday, June 28 warned Matawalle to ditch his defection plans as no law allows him to do so without vacating his seat.

The party argued that the constitution only recognises a political party as owner of votes secured in an election, with the candidate as merely its agent.

"The PDP categorically cautions Bello Matawalle to know that his plans amount to a decision to vacate office," PDP said.

The party also cautioned Zamfara state and federal lawmakers not to follow the governor to the APC as they'd lose their seats as directed by the constitution.

Even though the constitution stipulates that a lawmaker can change parties without losing their seat only if their party is in crisis or merges with another, changing parties for no good reason is hardly ever punished.

"There is no division in the PDP to warrant defection of any of our lawmakers," the party warned.

While the constitution explicitly states loss of seat as punishment for lawmakers that change parties, except in the event of specific circumstances, it is silent on other public office holders doing the same.

Matawalle's loss to the APC is PDP's third such loss of a governor since Dave Umahi of Ebonyi defected in November 2020, and Ben Ayade defected last month.

15 Persons Abducted In Niger State Escaped From Their Captors’ Den Into Zamfara Forest

At least 15 persons recently abducted by bandits in Tegina town of Niger State have escaped from their captors' den in Zamfara State.

The 15 were among the adults abducted together with 156 pupils of the Salihu Tanko Islamic School more than two weeks ago but were said to be separated from the children before been taken to a forest in Zamfara State.

It was reliably learnt that the 15 victims managed to open the door of the house in which they were locked in the forest after the bandits stationed to guard them were deeply asleep as a result of drunkenness.

It was also gathered that the escapees moved in different directions so that they will not arouse suspicion from other bandits in the forest.

Some of the victims managed to come out from a bush around Zaria and sought the help of some military personnel who helped them in calling their people in Niger State.

One of the escapees, who first arrived in Tegina, broke the news which made the Niger State Government to immediately swing into action to assist the remaining victims.
