Roma Sack Mourinho After Three Years In Charge

Roma announced on Tuesday that Jose Mourinho has been dismissed from his role as the coach of the Serie A side, citing that the decision was made "in the best interests of the club." Despite his contract initially set to conclude in June, Mourinho and his technical team will depart from the club with immediate effect, as confirmed by Roma.

Dan and Ryan Friedkin, the owners of AS Roma, expressed gratitude to Mourinho for his passion and dedication during his tenure with the club. While acknowledging the positive memories created under Mourinho's leadership, the owners emphasized that an immediate change is necessary for the club's overall benefit.

The 60-year-old Portuguese manager, who took charge in 2021, achieved notable success with Roma, clinching the Europa League trophy in 2022 and reaching the final of the Europa League last season. However, Roma has faced challenges in the current campaign, occupying the ninth position in Serie A and trailing five points behind the Champions League positions. A recent 3-1 defeat at the hands of AC Milan added to their struggles.

In parting words, the owners extended their best wishes to Mourinho and his assistants in their future endeavours. Italian media speculate that former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, may step in as Mourinho's successor as coach.

AFCON2023: I Am Not Happy With Result, Says Peseiro After Super Eagles Draw

Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has conveyed his disappointment regarding the outcome of the match between his team and the Elephants of Equatorial Guinea on Sunday at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ivory Coast. Despite the anticipation surrounding the African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, Nigeria was held to a 1-1 draw by Equatorial Guinea in Group A.

Osimhen managed to level the score in the 38th minute of the first half with a well-timed header, responding swiftly after Iban Edu opened the scoring. The match concluded with both teams securing one point each, trailing the host nation by two points.

Expressing his dissatisfaction in a post-match interview, Peseiro stated, “I am not happy. This draw does not suit us. Our team created a lot of chances, but we did not score.” He emphasized the team's intention to secure a victory, highlighting the missed opportunities and asserting their deserving win over Equatorial Guinea.

Acknowledging the unpredictable nature of football, Peseiro commented, “If you draw and your opponent deserves a win, then you must accept it because I think we deserved to beat Equatorial Guinea, but sometimes these things happen in football.”

Despite his sadness about the result, Peseiro expressed satisfaction with the team's capacity to play. He emphasized the need for improved command and control of the game, effective attacking strategies, and enhanced finishing. Peseiro remained optimistic, stating, "I believe we can create fewer opportunities and score more.”

Providing an update on Alhassan Yusuf's injury, Peseiro acknowledged the player's commendable performance and expressed hope that the injury is not severe. Looking ahead, Nigeria will face the host, Ivory Coast, on Thursday in their second Group A game, a crucial match that the three-time African champions must win to enhance their chances of progressing to the next round.

January 12, 2024 AFCON: Onuachu Replaces Injured Sadiq Umar

AFCON: Onuachu Replaces Injured Sadiq Umar

This is another blow for the Super Eagles, as striker Sadiq Umar is forced to sit out the 2023 African Cup of Nations due to a knee injury sustained during Nigeria's 2-0 friendly defeat against the Syli Stars of Guinea on Monday.

This setback follows the earlier exclusion of Victor Boniface from the competition set to commence tomorrow, January 13, in Ivory Coast.

In response to Umar's injury, the official Super Eagles account announced in a Friday statement on X that Paul Onuachu would step in to replace him. The 26-year-old Umar's absence due to injury prompted the call-up of Onuachu to bolster the squad for the upcoming tournament.

The statement read, "Sadiq Umar is out of the AFCON 2023 squad due to injury, and Paul Onuachu replaces him."

Onuachu, who was part of the AFCON 2019 finals in Egypt, unfortunately missed the previous competition in Cameroon due to an injury. Now, the 29-year-old, with an impressive record of nine goals and three assists in 15 games for Trabzonspor this season, can impact the upcoming African football showcase.

AFCON 2023: Why Peseiro’s New 3-4-3 Formation For Super Eagles Won’t Work —Udeze

Former Nigeria international Ifeanyi Udeze has advised Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro that the team should abandon adopting the 3-4-3 formation.

Peseiro had experimented with this formation in the Eagles' recent friendly against Guinea, which ended in a 2-0 loss. The Portuguese coach typically favours the 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 formations.

Udeze, reacting to the introduction of the 3-4-3 formation as the team prepares for AFCON 2023, expressed his concern, stating that the Super Eagles lack the players suitable for this tactical approach. He pointed out that the success of the formation relies on fast and comfortable wingbacks, a criterion not met by the current squad.

"I think he should discard the idea of introducing the 3-4-3 formation in the Super Eagles because your wingbacks must be fast for you to operate the formation. Unfortunately, our wingbacks are neither fast nor comfortable on the ball," Udeze commented.

Highlighting specific challenges with the formation, Udeze mentioned the demands on the two central midfielders. He emphasised the need for a strong-standing midfielder and another capable of attacking and defensive responsibilities. Concluding his analysis, Udeze expressed concern that the 3-4-3 formation could expose the Super Eagles, urging Peseiro to reconsider its implementation.

In related news, the Eagles will be without Victor Boniface due to a groin injury sustained in training. Nice star Terem Moffi will replace Bayer Leverkusen striker Boniface. The team is expected to arrive in Nigeria on Tuesday from Abu Dhabi before proceeding to Côte d’Ivoire for the upcoming tournament.
