NBA Fines James Harden $100,000 For Threat To Skip 76ers Games

The NBA has fined James Harden $100,000 for saying he would not play for the Philadelphia 76ers while President Daryl Morey was in charge.

In an interview, the guard called Morey a "liar" after reports the 76ers had ended talks about trading him.

Harden, 33, was keen to join the LA Clippers before talks faltered.

The NBA said the fine was for saying "he would not perform the services called for under his player contract unless traded to another team".

In response, the National Basketball Players Association said: "We respectfully disagree with the league's decision to discipline James Harden for recent comments he made, which we believe do not violate the rule against public trade demands.

"We intend to file a grievance and have the matter heard by our Arbitrator."

The fine relates to comments made by Harden on 14 and 17 August, when he threatened to strike by refusing to play for the 76ers over their refusal to trade him.

The NBA added: "The league's investigation, which included an interview of Harden, confirmed that these comments referenced Harden's belief that the 76ers would not accommodate his request to be traded."

Harden made the controversial comments about Morey on 14 August during a promotional event in China.

Harden was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2018 while playing for the Houston Rockets, where Morey was general manager.

Harden helped the 76ers, alongside reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid, to last season's Eastern Conference semi-finals, where they lost to rivals Boston Celtics after blowing a 3-2 lead in the series.

West Ham Sign Ex-Arsenal Defender From Stuttgart

West Ham United have signed Greece defender Konstantinos Mavropanos from Stuttgart for an undisclosed fee.

Mavropanos, 25, has signed a five-year contract with the Hammers and has taken the number 15 shirt.

Arsenal signed him in January 2018 but only made seven Premier League appearances before being loaned out.

"I'm looking forward to the next step in my career," he said. "I will give everything for the shirt.

"I am really happy and excited to be here and back in the Premier League."

Mavropanos, who has been capped 19 times by Greece, becomes West Ham's third summer signing after midfielders James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez arrived from Southampton and Ajax, respectively.

He played 34 times for Stuttgart in all competitions last season as the German side narrowly avoided relegation and made 89 appearances overall, scoring eight goals.

Mavropanos joined the Bundesliga club from Arsenal on a season-long loan in July 2020, which was extended for a second season before the move was made permanent.

Hammers boss David Moyes backed Mavropanos to provide competition to the club's existing defenders.

"I'm pleased to welcome Konstantinos to West Ham," said the 60-year-old Scot.

"We've been looking to add to our centre-half options this summer, so it's good we've brought in an international defender of his ability.

"We're looking forward to integrating him into the group.”

Barcelona Beat Cadiz For First Win Of Season

Pedri and Ferran Torres’ late strikes earned La Liga champions Barcelona a 2-0 win over Cadiz in their first competitive home game away from Camp Nou on Sunday.

Playing at the Olympic Stadium on the city’s Montjuic hill while their stadium is rebuilt and upgraded over the next year-and-a-half, the visitors nearly thwarted Barcelona.

Barca coach Xavi Hernandez, banned from the dugout after being sent off against Getafe, selected 16-year-old Lamine Yamal on the right instead of the suspended Raphinha, who was also dismissed last weekend.

On his first start for the club, Yamal came closest for the Catalans in the first half with an angled strike expertly tipped to safety by Jeremias Ledesma.

The forward thrilled nearly 40,000 fans — around 10,000 empty seats with a low uptake on season tickets because of the temporary move from Camp Nou.

At the other end, Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen went one better with a superb save to deny Roger Marti one-on-one after Alejandro Balde gave the ball away on the halfway line.

After Getafe held them to a frustrating goalless draw on the opening weekend, Cadiz almost managed the same feat until Ilkay Gundogan cleverly released Pedri to score.

Substitute Torres drove through the middle and tucked home in stoppage time to put a gloss on what was another unconvincing performance.

Djokovic Triumph In Cincinnati Open Title, Intensifies Rivalry With Win Over Alcaraz

Novak Djokovic avenged his Wimbledon final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz by beating the Spaniard in under four hours to win the Cincinnati Open.

The Serb survived a match point in the second set before winning 5-7 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-4). Top seed Alcaraz beat Djokovic in five sets in last month's Wimbledon final.

Djokovic compared the draining win to his Australian Open final victory 2012 when he defeated Nadal in five hours and 53 minutes.

"The feeling that I have on the court reminds me a little bit of when I was facing [Rafael] Nadal when we were at our prime," Djokovic said. "I don't think I've played too many matches like this."

After missing out on a match point in the second-set tie-break, Alcaraz found himself 5-3 down in the third, but he saved two match points to pull back to 5-4 before breaking Djokovic's serve to level the set.

However, Djokovic went 5-4 up on Alcaraz's serve in the tie-break before winning the next two points to claim victory in three hours and 49 minutes - the longest best-of-three-sets final in ATP Tour history.

Both players will be in action next week at the US Open, where Alcaraz will attempt to defend his title. At the same time, Djokovic, bidding for a 24th Grand Slam win, returns after missing last year's tournament because of his Covid vaccination.
