Biden Bans Russian Oil Imports To U.S.

U.S President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced that the United States would no longer allow for the importation of Russian oil, the latest sanction to punish Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.

Biden who announced the sanction from the White House said Russian oil would no longer be accepted at U.S. ports.

The oil embargo, Biden said, would target the main artery of Russia’s economy.

“The ban on Russian oil and gas has strong bipartisan support in the Congress and in the country.

“Americans have rallied to support the people of Ukraine and made it clear we will not be part of subsidizing Putin’s war.

“This decision today is not without costs here at home. Putin’s war is already hurting American families at the pump — and this will drive up costs further.

“So, I will take every step we can to minimise Putin’s price hike here at home,’’ he said.

The U.S. leader said in coordination with our partners, we had already announced a collective release of 60 million barrels of oil from our Strategic Petroleum Reserves— half of that from the United States.

“We’re taking steps to ensure a reliable supply of global energy. And we’re going to keep working with every tool at our disposal to protect American families and businesses.

“Let me say to the oil and gas companies and finance firms that back them: We understand that Putin’s war against the people of Ukraine is causing prices to rise.

“But that is no excuse for excess price increases, or padding profits, or any kind of effort to exploit this situation,’’ he said.

Ukraine’s World Cup Semi-Final Playoff Postponed

Scotland and Ukraine’s World Cup play-off semi-final has been postponed.

The nations were set to meet at Hampden on 24 March but Ukraine requested Fifa push back the tie following Russia’s invasion of the country.

As a result, the play-off final for the winners against either Wales or Austria on 29 March will now also be delayed.

Discussions are under way for a new date, with the Nations League window in June the most likely option.

The World Cup finals take place from 21 November to 18 December.

A large contingent of Ukraine’s recent squads has contained players from their homeland, with 15 out of the 23-man squad in November’s World Cup qualifiers playing in their home leagues.

Both sides are set to face each other in June on Nations League duty, with each side already scheduled to play four games during that break.

Netflix Suspends Service In Russia Amid Ukraine Invasion

Netflix has moved to bar its streaming service in Russia following President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Before the ban, the streamer was said to be working on four originals in Russia.

According to various sources, the streaming service said that it would halt all future initiatives, acquisitions, and services in Russia in an effort to oppose the country’s conflict.

“We have decided to discontinue our service in Russia due to the situation on the ground,” a Netflix spokeswoman said in a recent interview.

Netflix had already announced four new Russian originals, including a murder thriller series created by Russian filmmaker Dasha Zhuk, prior to the recent move. The series was placed on hold once primary photography began.

Despite the fact that the streaming platform is relatively young in Russia (it began in 2016 with an estimated million members), the newest action follows other worldwide corporate entities and film studios who have decided to boycott the country in recent weeks due to the ongoing war.
Even while sanctions remain in place, companies such as Microsoft and Apple have indicated that they are
suspending operations in the country.

Ukraine, Russia Prepare For 3rd Round Of Peace Talks

Ukraine and Russia are expected to meet for third round of negotiations, which both sides had said could take place on Monday.

The location and exact time of the talks is not mention yet.

The two delegations last met in the Brest region in western Belarus for two rounds of peace talks and agreed to have humanitarian corridors in place in the embattled cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha to facilitate the evacuation of civilians.

However, the attempt to evacuate Mariupol failed on Sunday, according to the Kremlin and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Russia and Ukraine traded blame for failing to adhere to the agreed ceasefire.

The head of the Ukrainian delegation for talks with Russia, David Arachamija, rejected Russia’s core demands as “not acceptable” in an interview with Fox News.

“I would not say we are moving fast because we have a lot of people killed every day, especially civilians,” he said when asked about the progress of the negotiations.

“It’s tough, honestly, but we are still demonstrating some progress.

“At least, two groups are listening to each other and actively discussing different things.”

Arachamija added that the only parts which are almost impossible to agree on are Crimea and so-called republics that Russia insists that we recognise as independent.

“This is not acceptable within Ukrainian society.”

He said Russia demands that the Crimean Peninsula, which it annexed in 2014, be recognised as Russian territory.

In addition, he said it wants the regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, controlled by pro-Russian separatists, recognised as independent states.

Moscow also calls for a complete “demilitarization” of Ukraine.
