Presidency Addressing Economist On Threats To Nigeria’s Stability

The presidency has described a recent article by The Economist on Nigeria’s challenges as “flawed” and “anti-Nigeria”.

In the article which was published on Saturday, The Economist had criticized the federal government’s approach to insecurity, saying “when violence erupts, the government does nothing or cracks heads almost indiscriminately”.

The article had also criticized security agencies, and in its recommendations, said “to stop the slide towards lawlessness, Nigeria’s government should make its own forces obey the law”.

Reacting in a statement on Sunday, presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, said while the article’s identification of the security threats facing Nigeria are “correct”, the present administration is the only government that has shown determination to fight insecurity.

While faulting the description of banditry attacks in the article, Shehu said criminals who have resources to shoot down military aircraft shouldn’t be referred to as “bandits”, but as “highly organized crime syndicates with huge resources and weaponry”.

He added that while such organized syndicates are not different from insurgents, the current administration remains committed to addressing the situation.

Presidency Advice To Yoruba Nation

The presidency has advised Yoruba Nation protesters to be mindful of the relationship with the outlawed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB).

Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu, gave the warning while reacting to the protest that both groups staged at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Brandishing placards and chanting protest songs, the self-determination agitators called on Nigerian leaders and stakeholders to rise up and fight for secession.

But in a statement, Shehu said while the right to protest is legitimate, it is improper for the demonstrators to associate with a terrorist group.

He said it is not unexpected for Nigerian diaspora groups to use the world’s largest platform – the United Nations General Assembly – to garner attention to their causes.

Highlighting the atrocities of IPOB, Shehu said the outlawed group had already announced a “50,000 strong paramilitary organisation”.

Shehu said IPOB regularly murders security services and innocent civilians, with a significant uptick of violent attacks this year while it is currently attempting to hold Nigerian states hostage with orders to stay at home under threat of terror.

Presidency Has Blocked Me From Seeing Buhari, Says Governor Samuel Ortom

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has said since being blocked from visiting President Muhammadu Buhari by those in Aso Villa, that he has turned to using the mass media as a way of reaching out to the president.

The governor accused Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore of continued sponsorship of herdsmen to attack, maim, rape and ransack helpless communities in Benue State, which claimed has led to the displacement of about 1.5 million persons.

He said there was no land in Benue State for open grazing, but there is land for ranching for any interested applicant.

According to Governor Orton, the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration has brought the country to 20 years of retrogression, and when I advised the president on what should be the way forward, they would insult me to divert attention, how can I keep quiet when my People are being killed and displaced.

Presidency Says The Current Administration Never Promised To Make One Naira Become Equivalent To One Dollar

The Presidency has challenged anyone with clips on alleged comment that the current administration promised to make one naira become equivalent to one dollar to make them available.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, FEMI ADESINA, said the claims suggesting that President BUHARI made such a promise, are false.

While appearing on a monitored programme, ADESINA said those spreading such information were doing so to portray the President in bad light.

ADESINA said the minister of information, Alhaji LAI MOHAMMED has debunked the claim severally and challenged anyone with clips and publications to make them available.
