Olympics Opening Ceremony Director Dismissed On Eve Of Event

The show director of the Olympics opening ceremony has been dismissed, one day before the event is due to be held.

Footage of Kentaro Kobayashi from the 1990s recently emerged in which he seems to be making jokes about the Holocaust.

Japan's Olympic chief Seiko Hashimoto called out the video saying it ridiculed "painful facts of history".

The dismissal is the latest in a string of scandals to hit the Games.

It comes days after a composer quit the team creating the ceremony after it emerged he had bullied classmates with disabilities at school.

Organisers are also dealing with rising Covid case numbers among athletes and officials. On Thursday, organisers said 91 people accredited for the Games have now tested positive for the virus.

After the removal of Mr Kobayashi, organisers are now re-assessing how to hold Friday's event.

January 29, 2021 Suarez Navarro Keen On Olympics Return After Cancer Treatment

Suarez Navarro Keen On Olympics Return After Cancer Treatment

Former world number six Carla Suarez Navarro says she is responding "very well" to cancer treatment and "dreams" of returning for one last major event - this year's Tokyo Olympics.

The Spaniard, 32, was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma last year.

Suarez Navarro posted on Twitter on Monday that she was having her last chemotherapy session.

"I don't want people to remember me in a hospital bed, so I'd like to go again into a big tournament," she said.

"It would be a dream to do that - an Olympic Games to say bye to my tennis family and also all my tennis fans."

Suarez Navarro, who had previously planned to retire in 2020, said she has discussed teaming up with Garbine Muguruza, her doubles partner at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The seven-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist says her focus remains on treatment and recovering physically, but said she began to reconsider her plans to retire after doctors encouraged her to continue to play tennis.

Suarez Navarro, who is still ranked 85 in the world despite last playing in February 2020, returned to the court for the first time in December to practice with Italy's former world number five Sara Errani in Barcelona.

March 5, 2020 Olympics: Nigeria listed among countries with highest doping risk

Olympics: Nigeria listed among countries with highest doping risk

Morocco and Nigeria were on Thursday added to the list of countries at the highest doping risk by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), less than five months from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Countries worldwide are classified by the AIU in three categories — A, B and C — according to the level of doping risk to the sport, with category A having the highest doping risk to the sport and category C the lowest.

Morocco and Nigeria join Bahrain, Belarus, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Ukraine as having category A status. Russia has been banned over doping since November 2015.

The AIU, the independent anti-doping watchdog for track and field, said that in 2019, the Nigerian athletics federation failed to report on compliance as a category B country.

“This very serious situation motivated the AIU board to move Nigeria into category A,” it said.

Turning to Morocco, the AIU said that, despite significant efforts, “a number of national-level issues have not been addressed”.

“The doping threat in Morocco remains acute and the AIU considers that more needs to be done to address the threat, where applicable, with the support of the relevant Moroccan authorities.”

Boxers to miss Olympics qualifier championship in Russia

Nigeria will miss the first opportunity of having boxers qualify for the 2020 summer Olympics in Tokyo as lack of funds ruled the team out of the 2019 AIBA Men’s World Championships in Ekaterinburg, Russia from September 7 to 21.

The female team will also miss out on their qualifying series, also to be hosted in Russia, from September 30 to October 14 in Ulan Ude.

The boxing team was poorly represented at the 2016 edition of the Olympics in Brazil with only Efe Ajagba competing after qualifying from the sole African qualifying series in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

Ajagba went on to reach the quarter-final of the Games before being defeated by Kazakhstani Ivan Dychko.

Team Nigeria had a poor outing at the last African Games in Morocco, winning one gold, one silver and five bronze medals.

The Nigeria Boxing Federation has failed to attend major international events in recent years which have further reduced Nigeria’s ranking in the Games.
