NLC Charges Government To Address Rising Unemployment Rate In The Country

The Nigeria Labour Congress has challenged the Federal Government to urgently address the rising unemployment rate in the country, which it described as a time bomb.

It said it will be difficult for the nation to have peace if the issue of unemployment is not checked.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, said these during the 40th-anniversary celebration of the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria.

He said with what was happening today, the organized labour needed more collaboration and sensitization of every worker, to be able to be on the same page and address some of the ills.

On his part, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said the Buhari-led administration had maintained a calm industrial environment.

He said the current government had in six years and five months been very effective in job creation, despite the inherited socioeconomic downturn.

Organised Labour To Meet Over Governor’s N408.5/Litre Proposal

In business news, the Nigeria Labour Congress will today come up with its position on the recommendation by governors that the price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, be raised from N162/litre to N408.5/litre.

A committee set up by the Nigeria Governor's Forum had on Wednesday called for immediate removal of petrol subsidy.

It also recommended a petrol price of between N380/litre and N408.5/litre.

However, the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Thursday advised the Federal Government to be tactful when removing petrol subsidy.

They recommended that it be done gradually.

NNPC has been the sole importer of petrol into Nigeria for more than three years running and awaiting for Federal Government's position on the recommendation before it would adjust petrol price.

Officials of both the NLC and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers in separate exclusive interviews had last week argued that the continued imports of petrol by the NNPC was at the detriment of Nigeria's refineries.

It said there was no need for the NLC to flex muscles regarding Governor NASIR EL-RUFAI's sack of local government workers.

The governors under the aegis of the Progressive Governors Forum gave the charge in a statement issued in Abuja and signed by their chairman and Governor of Kebbi state, ABUBAKAR ATIKU BAGUDU.

PGF said it has been following unfolding developments between the NLC and the Kaduna State Government over the issue of rightsizing Local Government employees with deep concerns.

Armed Thugs Attacks Protesting NLC Members In Kaduna State

The protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress in Kaduna state has turned violent as armed thugs attacked the workers with dangerous weapons.

The workers had converged at the popular NEPA roundabout in the Kaduna capital city to continue the day two of their protest when the thugs invaded the area and started throwing stones and other dangerous weapons at them.

The attack forced many of the protesters to scamper for safety.

It is not known who actually sent the thugs, but the NLC President, AYUBA WABBA pointed accusing fingers at the state governor, NASIR EL-RUFAI.
