Niger NLC vows to pressure gov to pay N200,000 minimum wage if…

Idris Lafene, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Niger State, has stated that if it becomes law, labor will require the Niger State Government to pay N200,000.

This was said by the Labour leader in a telephone conversation with The PUNCH on Sunday, when he also stated that the state will be required to follow the law.

He emphasized that, if put into law, the government will be required to abide by the law, adding that it is not a question of whether or not they can afford it.

“There are laws, and if the measure becomes law, we’ll apply pressure. I can’t, however, speak for the government, as you well know. And since laws are required to be followed, we are aware that if there is a law, it must be followed.

“I said there are laws, whether they can afford it or not is not the issue, if it is passed into it is binding,” the man stated.

Additionally, he stated that the national labor organization is assisting the states in their discussions.

“We’re being led along. He questioned, “Are we not a part of the national body of the NLC?”

When asked if the state government could pay N200,000, the Governor of Niger State’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ibahim Bologi, responded that when they reached the bridge, the state will know how to cross it.

His statement read, “The negotiation is currently at the national level; it may be amended with the states.

He recommended that following her first Executive Council meeting, the newly appointed commissioner of information would be able to remark on the matters.

If Diplomacy Fails, We Will Attack Niger — ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, declared yesterday in Accra, Ghana, that if all efforts to overturn the coup in Niger Republic fail, it will not hesitate to invade the country.

This comes as the German government stated its support for European Union sanctions put on the country’s military dictatorship.

It will be remembered that at its second extraordinary meeting in Abuja last week, ECOWAS Heads of State and Government activated its standing force should the Niger junta refuse to restore to power the country’s expelled president, Mohamed Bazoum.

The warning came as member-state defense officials gathered in Ghana’s capital to plan the next course of action in Niger and discuss the details of the standby force. The meeting is still going on today.

“Let no one doubt that if all else fails, the valiant forces of West Africa…are ready to respond to the call of duty.”

He cited previous ECOWAS deployments in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and elsewhere as examples of military readiness.

Italy Urges ECOWAS To Extend Deadline For Military Intervention In Niger

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has called for a diplomatic approach to resolving the crisis in Niger, as reported by Reuters on August 7, 2023.

He stressed the importance of extending the deadline set by ECOWAS, which had expired the night before.

In a statement to La Stampa newspaper, Tajani stated, "The only way is the diplomatic one. I hope that the ultimatum of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which expired last night at midnight, will be extended today." The situation escalated when Niger closed its airspace on August 6, 2023, without any indication of when it will reopen.

The closure came amid perceived threats of military intervention by the West African regional bloc in response to the coup that ousted President Mohammed Bazoum.

Currently, President Bazoum remains in detention, contributing to tensions and uncertainties in Niger's political landscape. The coup leaders' rejection of the deadline complicates the resolution process, leaving ECOWAS with limited options to ensure a peaceful transition of power.

Following the July 26 coup, thousands of junta supporters gathered at a stadium in Niamey, expressing their approval of not yielding to external pressure to step down by ECOWAS's deadline. The gathering highlighted the deep divide within the country over the legitimacy of the current leadership.

Niger Coupists Adamant As Deadline Expires

The military junta in Niger shows no signs of backing down as the one-week ultimatum given by ECOWAS to step down and allow President Mohamed Bazoum's return to office has expired.

Despite threats of regional military intervention, the coup plotters have garnered significant support from the civil population, with thousands rallying in Niamey and other major cities.

Amid the escalating crisis, the Nigerian Senate has passed a resolution urging President Bola Tinubu to engage in diplomatic efforts to address the political situation in Niger Republic.

Clarifying misconceptions, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that President Tinubu did not seek Senate approval for military deployment against the Coupists but instead sought approval for the implementation of ECOWAS resolutions as the Chairman.
