Atiku Condemns Killing Of Nabeeha, Urges Security Reform

The 2023 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed sadness at the killing of Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, who was abducted alongside her siblings.

Alhaji Mansoor Al-Kadriyar and his six children, including Nabeeha, were taken from their home in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on the second of January.

Nabeeha, a 400-level student of biological science at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, was tragically killed last Friday.

It was gathered that the gunmen had earlier released their father, asking him to get N60 million in ransom for the release of his daughters before Friday, January 12.

The hoodlums killed the oldest of the six girls, Nabeeha, and dumped her body somewhere for her parents to bury, as they were unable to raise the money and have now increased their demand to N100 million.

In reaction, Atiku said it is yet another reminder that kidnappers and bandits are operating unhindered in the country, while noting that the security architecture needs to be rejigged to the extent that it stems the free rein of criminal elements and guarantees the safety of lives and property.

Also reacting, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, said the tragic killing not only shows how insecurity currently ravages the nation but also shows “how helpless Nigerians have become in the face of these dangers.”

According to him, the latest tragedy should prick the conscience of leaders to realize their primary duty, which, according to the constitution, is to protect the life of every Nigerian citizen.

Moreover, the FCT Police Command recently confirmed the deteriorating security situation in the nation’s capital. It said that there had been a series of reported cases of kidnapping within the FCT and claimed that the command was on top of the situation.

House Of Representatives Demands Body Cameras For Security Agents To Check Allegations Of Extortion, Harassment

The House of Representatives has called for provision of body-worn cameras for police, customs officers and other security agents.

Adopting a motion by CHINEDU EMEKA MARTINS, the House said the cameras would ensure security of operatives and citizens.

MARTINS had cited allegations of harassment, extortion and extra-judicial killings of citizens by security operatives.

He said body cameras would keep the security operatives in check, considering the massive allegations of human rights violation against them and lack of evidence to indict them.

The House therefore mandated its Committees on Police Affairs, Army and National Security and Intelligence to ensure compliance.

In another vein, the lawmakers called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to urgently deploy physical enumerators and other assistance to conduct new voter registration across all federal constituencies.

This followed a motion by ABUBAKAR YALLEMAN.

INEC had put in place a machinery for a virtual continuous voters registration, but the online process does not seem satisfactory to the lawmakers.
